Greetings.

I whipped off my sump gasket today, cleaned it inside and out and replaced the sealant, and I don't have any more oil leaking from it, at all! However, my oil filter is leaking copiously, and I don't know why. I followed the instructions when putting it on, and it leaked afterwards, so I've tightened it up a bit, and still get the leaking, so I'm wondering if anyone knows what I can look at there. I've also got oil coming from the rocker cover breather pipe bit, and also the bolt in the middle of the rocker cover (with the bracket that holds the coolant pipes). I think I just need a washer for the bolt in the middle, and I was going to try a new seal on the breather pipe. I read a thread recently with a chap that had the same problem, and they were looking at an engine rebuild to sort it. Something to do with a build up of pressure forcing oil out (needed a new head gasket, new piston rings et al). I don't have an engine hoist, so I'm hoping it's not that!

Any ideas on the oil filter though? I'd like to get to the stage where I'm allowed to put the truck on the drive without the other half going ballistic!
 
I had a problem of leaking oil from the rear crankshaft bearing, which is still there and also oil coming out from the breather pipe, changed the gasket on the breather and no more oil coming out, even though I have some back compression.

The oil leak at the bolt in the middle of the rocker cover was sorted out by a washer. That did the job. Will do the rear crankshaft bearing oil seal later. Damn thing drinks oil and drips oil too.

Get yourself a new oil filter and see, dont forget to clean the area where the filter fits and also oil the new filter before putting it.
 
Well, I've ordered a new oil filter. I've read that it could be that the old rubber seal was still on, so when I get it off, fingers crossed that that's the problem! I've just got underneath again after a night away from it, and I've still got oil coming from the back of the sump area. I think it must be that rear output shaft seal, which is a right bugger. I don't have an engine hoist, so I think I'll just have to leave it leaking until I need the clutch done or something :( I think most of the oil I'm losing is coming from the filter though, so that's fairly good news! Doesn't look like I'll be allowed to per 'er on the drive any time soon though..
 
Ello Tom , long time no hear ( I.ve been away for a bit ) . Welcome to my club with the leaking rear flywheel housing-block oil seal ( mine P**ses out too i just keep lobbing oil at it now and then to keep it topped up , I cant be arsed to rip the motor out as ill be doing a 200tdi swap in the next few months .
Check your oil thermostat housing seal for leaks ( cooler pipes go into the top of it ) .

Dont forget the offers still there for me to come round and take a look ( or you to come to mine as your only 5 mins away )
Btw i might even let you borrow my hoist !!!! :) .
 
Got a new filter, I'll swap it over this weekend. The thread seemed alright to me, so I hope it's not that!
 
i know its noting to do with it but when i replace a fuel pump on a p38 the increase in pressure made the breather pipes leak cos they was also nackered. you fix one leak two more pop up. is there any breather pipes blocked
 
i now it's daft question but what sealant would i use on my sump (300tdi defender 110) because in the manual it say's use hylosil rtv102 but i can't find any website that sells it, so is there something else i can use that does the some job.

When I did mine I used Hylomar 102, which is equivalent. The sump doesn't leak any more, still got other leaks all around the place though, but I'm not putting in a litre of oil each month now :)
