Me again,

Unfortunately my first ever post did not receive a response so I'm going to give it one more try!
I just would like to know the best method of attaching chequer plate bits to my Defender 90. I notice the wing tops pieces are pre-drilled but the bumber top and sill plates are not. Would I be correct in assuming these parts should be pop riveted into place? Also, should anything be used underneath before fitting. For the sill plates how far apart should the fixings be. I have to say I'm surprised instructions were not provided by the supplier and when I tried alling them the response was negative to say the least.

i would just use small self tapping screws about 4-6 inches apart, that way it can be removed every so often and cleaned behind to stop it rusting.
the other method it to instead use pop rivets and to put a thick line of sealant around the edge to stop moisture from getting in if the plate is a more permanant feature
 
ey up bazwold fitted mine with stainless self tappers and ran a bead of silicone sealant round the under edges to stop moisture and crap getting underneath..hope that helps
 
Personally, I would use rivets but I would not use any sealant around the edges, as whatever you do, moisture will find its way under the chequer plate and all the sealant will do, is trap it under the chequer plate.

Leave it unsealed and the water will go in and then drain out again - its a no brainer!
 
Pop rivets and a layer of your own semen underneath.

It won't keep the water out, but if you tell your mates, they won't keep sitting on the wings of your motor every time you park up.
 
If you have bought 2mm plate it will be ok if your wing tops are not badly dented. 3mm is best for wing tops... 2mm is fine for bumper tops and sills. A bead of seal around the edges and the vent cut outs will stop any water getting underneath... rivets are fine. You could even use 'no nails' on the bumper tops if you dont want to drill your bumper but 4 rivets are cheaper.
