Some good news and bad news.
Good news is that all the turbo hoses arrived.
Bad news is that our insurance provider went bankrupt and left our car uninsured last weekend so we couldn't go to the in laws to fit the hoses. We'll be heading there on Friday night so all day Saturday I'll be replacing each hose. I'll make sure to take plenty of pics and post them here.

I can't wait to get to the bottom of this.
 
Hi all, just a quick one on the car.
Started working on it this morning but, despite how the pictures appear, had to stop due to a storm.
Managed to get the intercooler hoses off on the output side. Replaced but had to stop short of fitting the small one to the throttle body.

I did find oil in the hoses (the one in the pictures is the plastic part that connects the output hose and small hose to throttle body. I know that a little oil isn't something to be worried about but imo, the oil in the pic seems to be quite excessive? Likely to be from a failed turbo after all?

so far I haven't found any evidence of damage to the intercooler outlet side hoses.
Once the weather turns back around, I'll get to the throttle body hose and remove the intercooler input pipe. Will have to take it to the in laws' tractor ramp thing to get the 90 degree hose replaced but I'll probably do that tomorrow weather permitting (and if I can get these bloody hoses back on again).

Side note, there's a plastic guard underneath the toe hitch cover that if you take it off gives you better access to the hoses so you don't need to get it up on ramps. four 7mm bolts if I remember correctly.

Another quick update.
Weather picked up so was able to get back out to the car.

Managed to change all three hoses at the front of the car. (Hose into intercooler, hose out of intercooler and hose into manifold).
Was an absolute bitch to get the short manifold hose on as I'm certain the internal diameter is smaller than the OEM part.

Some good news and bad news.
Bad news is that when test driving after I finished, I heard a pretty loud pop and then car lurched pretty aggressively. drove back to the drive way to find that short manifold hose and completely come off the manifold.
Good news is that I must at least be getting enough boost to blow that hose off the manifold.

I've signed off the car for today - absolutely exhuasted.
Will get back to it tomorrow morning and hopefully have a working car again............................

Side note, I noticed even more oil on the mental pipe that comes from the turbo and attached to the intercooler inlet hose.
Does this look a lot to anyone/sign that there's something wrong with the turbo? Hoping it's just from the crankcase breather tube (if that's what it's called).

So the plot thickens.
Managed to get all hoses replaced including the 90 degree one coming out of the turbo.
Sadly doesn't seem to have fixed it.

I'm going to assume the intercooler but again, I don't want to throw more money unless I can definitely tell what part is needed.
Failing that, looks like a new turbo is in the cards.

All the old hoses actually look to be in decent condition with exception to the oil inside some of them. No visible holes or tears but I changed them all anyway.

Any further suggestions on what this could be @Nodge68?

P0299 is still coming up and again, I swear I can hear air leaking but unless it's the intercooler, I can't think where it could be coming from.
 
If your short hose blew off, are you sure you correctly sealed and fully tightened it, and that it hasn't slipped and air is getting out from that? There is only a small lip on the inlet and the clamp needs to make sure the pipe is tightly held in place and cant slip or leak. You can feel around it and just about see it from the top of the engine bay.

Yeah, I just forgot to tighten the top clamp before I test drove it. Tightened it and it was working as it normally does.
Fault code came back after a short time.
Left all the new hoses on but I've ran out of solutions without tearing the car down again.

I might take the car to the garage and ask that they do a leak test just to save some time with the diagnosing.
 
I dont think the amount of oil in your hoses is a concern by the way. Mine have always had oil in them, I take the intercooler inlet hose off to get to the oil filter for changing and there's always a consistent level of oil in there. My turbo im not concerned about. Someone else may say different, but mines been the same for the 4+ years I been changing oil in it every 5-6000k miles.

The a large majority of the oil in the boost system is introduced by the breather, which enters the air stream before the turbo. Sudden amounts of smoke would be a concern, but normal crankcase oil mist won't produce any perceptible smoke.

No update at present.
Took the bumper off again this morning to check the intercooler.
Nothing looked amiss but i was only able to check the underside of it.

I’m wondering if it could be the intake pipe that goes over the top of the engine? The little bagpipe looking pipe? Will spray some soapy water on it later to see.

It won't be the cross pipe, as that's not under boost pressure, just normal atmospheric pressure.

Was wondering if it was where the discrepancy from the MAP and MAF sensors could be coming from though? If the air escapes after the MAF but before the turbo and MAP would that not cause the underboost as well?

As before, I swear I can hear a large amount of air escaping from somewhere but it's hard to pinpoint it.
I was close to buying a new intercooler just so I know that isn't the problem but don't want to keep throwing money at it

You can check the pipe between the air filter and turbo inlet pipe for cracks on the convoluted section, which does happen. From memory it gives a code for insufficient MAF signal or something along those line.
I see your logic though, so definitely worth a check.

Finally have had enough of this turbo issue so have booked it in to the garage for a rebuild - they're claiming it's the turbo and at this rate, I can't be bothered wasting more time on it.

I have asked them to do a smoke leak test first just in case though.
Due to get the car back tomorrow hopefully. Will update when I hear back
 
What was the outcome?
Called this morning and they've just called back.
They're still waiting for the part (my understanding is that they're looking to replace the turbo cartridge instead of the entire turbo).
However, they said before they take the turbo apart, they want to do some more inspecting as he's not 100% sure it is the turbo (I told them this the first time I took it there!)

Getting slightly worried with this place as the first time I took it there for a diagnostic, the guy said it was the turbo.
When I took it there last week, I said I wasn't sure it was the turbo and I think it's a charged air leak instead and asked if they could do a smoke test first and that if there are no leaks then I'll be happy to go with their recommendation.

I don't think they've done the smoke test yet or if they'll do it at all but starting to sweat a little about them potentially throwing parts at the issue instead of correctly diagnosing it.

Will get a call tomorrow with more info.
