I have a free lander (2000) V6 2.5 petrol automatic with approx 66,000 on the clock with what I'm told has a HG failure. LR garage is offering to fix it for approx £1,500 or offer me £500 as a non runner. I paid £1,700 only 7 months ago and already had thermostat and coolant housing replaced and reluctant to let it go for £500 is this a reasonable offer or should I pay to fix and get shot of it asap? I have seen lots of posts with similar common proble
s and don't want to pour money into a leaking bucket so to speak I can't really afford but in a little bit of a bother with no car. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
 
How bout taking it to a non LR garage? A small reliable trustworthy sidestreet garage would probably do the job for half of that price for you. I wouldn't let it go for that, you'd get more back in breaking it.
 
put it on ebay, should make more than £500 & you won't have to worry about whether the garage has done a proper job or not.
 
Thanks for the replies. If £500 is too little what should be my expectation? I understand without looking at it, that may be difficult - just looking to get an idea. By "breaking it" I'm assuming you mean selling it in parts (???) or having a breaker offer cash and take it away? Again any suggestions of price?

Do you know of any good garages? I'm in Slough but could have AA tow it. But they would need to be VAT reg'd.
 
Fifteen Hundred sounds too much for a gasket change, i got mine down to three hundred and eighty by phoning around getting the best price, i had no problems with the gasket since. Unless anyone disagrees, try not to take it to a landy garage as they charge the earth for even the simplest of jobs.
 
..Not exactly on the doorstep I realise, but I use Newbury 4x4 (01635 32028) and they know Land Rover inside out and backwards AND don't charge the earth. Failing that I think Keith Gott could be worth a call?

Just wanted to say thanks to all those who posted suggestions. I'm a new landrover owner and new to using a forum such as this. Much appreciated. It looks like I shall be selling my currrent model, with a view to purchase a later edition. Do they still suffer from these faults or have they been addressed and can be reliable? Cheers
 
All new & old Frelanders have that problem - especially petrol. Just find a local guy to replace head gasket.

All the petrol models suffered from this right to the bitter end. The diesels are good & the Td4 can be bought with the auto box & can be tuned with a roveron synergy for around £200 which you really need to do. Even then it won't have the urge of the V6 but it'll go ok & be economical. Just check the threads on the Td4 engine to see all the possible ancillary issues before you buy so you can check it out fully. The engine itself (properly looked after) is bulletproof.
