Hi All, First time posting on this site but I've been here lots of times reading up on people's opinions before I purchased things (plus the site has nice land rover photos which is good too).

I've a 1972 S3 with a 19J 2.5TD engine but otherwise standard. I fitted a Fairey overdrive from another old vehicle. Its working fine but has a horrible "backlash" noise - what I mean is that if I'm accelerating hard its fine, if I decelerate hard its fine too but if I'm in-between (e.g. slowing down a bit or try to cruse) there is a horrible grating gnashing noise which beats all the other noise (of which there is a lot admittedly).

I'm considering pulling the overdrive out and having disco diffs installed which would do a similar gearing job (especially with the price of new overdrives)

My question to anyone who knows about Fairey overdrives is: Could the noise problem be the coupling bearing or clutch sleeve? I think these are replaceable without re-building the overdrive?

You can get refurb kits which consist of input gear and the needle rollers which are what usually wears 1st, on fleabay for 70 quidish but can't say for sure that's what your problem is

Rocky Mountain Spares are doing a "Overhaul kit for Fairey Overdrive Coupling" here: Rocky Mountain Spares UK > Improved Engineered Parts and Accessories for your Land Rover . I'm interested because it looks like its a job that can be done with 6 bolts holding the overdrive on and another four into the inspection panel on the transfer case - i.e. I could do it myself. I might chance the £75...
