Hi Folks,

Im sure theres someone out there that has done this before, but Im thinking of fitting sliding side windows to my 90 td5 van, now I know from research on here, that you measure once, twice, three times and cut once. but what dimensions do you cut the hole to? if you measure a window that is already in, then you have the outer black frame, and then the glass panels. Surely you dont cut the hole to the same size as the frame as it would just flop about, ive seen on Ebay that some windows come with a template, but for those that dont, is there a template you can purchase? Any help appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Folks,

if i were doing it i would measure from the inside of the vehicle you can see the inner window and where it fits to the body and make your own template

i have done this to my 90.
what windows are they? if they are normal / sliding windows what i done to get exact measurements .I phoned up Simmonites to enquire about there window surrounds pretending I will purchase them when I had fitted the windows. And ask them for the dimensions so you know their surrounds will fit. I know it's a bit sneaky but that way you know they will be correct. Failing that let me know and i will measure the sizes from set points around the frame.

just had a thought . I still have one piece i cut out so I can give you the exact height to cut I have not got the width size as I have cut a bit off to use else where.

lot more work in putting in new panels plus painting . I put my windows in in half a day start to finish and they dont leak either.

Thanks for the reply guys and apologies in saying thanks, i was expecting an email to say someone had replied to my post, but just logged in to see all your replies. Ive not chosen the windows yet, they will be sliding ones, but I like to get all my facts together before making a decision.

Wickford - You say you have the remains of a template, which windows did you use? as they might not be all the same dimensions.

I got them from paddocks i think. they are tinted with sliding windows , am pretty sure they are the same as originals fitted. if you need any sizes will do me best to help. they were quite straight forward to fit ,took me half a day . and they are the only parts that dont let in water . so as SB says i must have fitted them wrong.

all might become clear when they arrive . lol. final question, I realise you use blind rivets to put the frames in, but what size rivets do you use, and can you use a normal rivet gun as ive seen on Ebay that they sell blind rivet guns which makes me think you cant use a normal one.

Thanks for your help.

did you get all the sizes you needed. I used a normal rivet gun but it was hard going. the rivets are covered by a rubber trim i put clear mastic then put trim in , leave it a bit oversize as the rubber tends to shrink. also mastic the frames in before you rivet and they shouldnt leak . you can wipe off the excess and clean with white spirit on a cloth. not sure what size rivet i used i took the frame with me when i got them to make sure.
