Hi,

Any one know if I can fit power steering to my ex MOD 2.5na 90 ?

If it's possible which parts will fit?

Cheers

hello modstan,
yes you can convert to power steering ,you need to use disco parts . if your 90 is early (which it sounds like it is ) make sure you get the four bolt disco box ( they fit straight on ). also get the drag link that goes from the bottom off the box to the oposite hub . make sure you get the pump , reservoir and all the hoses , you will have to find a way to fit the pump to the engine . ( should'nt be a problem ) 2.5td or 200tdi parts should do it . when you know it all works you can change the steering relay and put your old drag link back on and replace your damper .
just done mine it works perfect ... good luck ...

If you manager to find all the parts, can you do a list and some nice photos of the upgrade :) I desperatly need to do mine too!

would love a list of parts also needed for this conversion please as i'm very new to this got my first ever landy last week and power steering definatly top of my list cheers

Hi all,

Got all the bits on order, they will be off a ranger rover, been told they will fit no problem!! I will let you all know how I get on.l

Hi

I have got it all fitted and working, not to big a job and works fine, I got the parts from a range rover and some from craddocks, cost me about £300 for all the bits, have a look on ebay there have been some parts on there.

Good luck John.

Thanks for the reply, can you remember the actual parts that you had to get? It would be much easier to have a list of the required parts.

When you say its not a big job, how much of not a big job is it!! how long did it take, did you need ant special tools?

Thanks in advance

Remeber the increased stress that can be brought on by having power steering, big heavy vehicles, big tyres don't like being dry steered.

If your having to work your steering excesivly hard then your probaly not moving, just because PAS is installed doesn't make this a good thing.

Just a note more than anything else. I think PAS in a city with a LR is a great idea!

Although you can use RR or Disco parts the correct 90/110 items are a direct replacement and fit perfectly (I didn't even have to drill any mounting holes for the reservoir whan I did mine as they were already there). Whan I fitted PAS to my old 2.5NA D I used a complete kit off a later Defender and it went straight on (bottom pully, pump mounting bracket etc). Bought for £150 at Billing, I had the whole job done in 4-5 hours (fitted new steering column UJ's at the same time as it was easier to do it then). Can't think whay you would need a new drag link unless that was because you used Disco parts? 4-Bolt box or 6-bolt (wasn't there a 3-bolt as well?), they all fit but the 4-bolt is the most common (it is the bolts on the top of the box that are counted, not the mounting bolts).

I am sure everyone knows (it even says it in the manual) but never hold the steering on full lock for more than about 20-seconds, LR PAS is known for being weak and doing that can lead to rapid failure.
When I had a new 300TDi engine & ancilarries fitted into my 90 I decided to fit a new box at the same time (everything else was new so why not that?), recon boxes are ok but there are some people who fit a new bottom seal to an old box, paint it black and sell it as recon. To avoid the chances of this I went straight for a new (genuine) box, be interesting to see how long it actually lasts (the old box was fine when I removed it and sold it on).

This is an interesting thread if a little old now. I have just got a 110 defender ex mod n/a 2.5 and I so need pas on this

Likewise Johnny, how did you get on with your conversion especially the crank pulley?Mine has a double pulley, did yours or was it a triple?was wondering if i would get away with using the double pulley or would i have to change to a triple pulley?mine isn't FFR. ex RAF 90.

MOD Double pulley won't work chaps the outer pulley is to big and drives the pump to fast and it doesn't line up either. Have a look in my thread Huddy posted. It's a piece of cake to do the only hard bit to track down is the PAS pump mount of a 2.5TD - 200tdi one won't fit.

hows did you get on johhny 5 with fitting your pas to the Landy 110 TD 2.5? I have just brought one and wonder how you got on! If you had a success please could you email me parts lists you used

I used Craddocks as well, they supplied me with everything I needed. Give them a call and they will tell you. I already had a double belt pulley on my ex MOD defender, my local garage had no problems fitting it all ( I didn't have the time).m
As the Defenders of my Defenders era had power steering as an option, I didn't feel this was a problem to put it in. You could keep it as is, but why struggle steering if it was fitted as an optional extra, makes sense to me.
