wot they got to do with hids?

mine passed an mot with hids in so that's good enough for me..

They are bits put on to a car which are after market that work perfectly fine and are most likely fit for purpose but are in fact ilegal cos a motor company cant be arsed to test em on certain models. Exactly the same as ya hids.

Statutory defence following the death of a driver dazzled by illegal HIDs...

'WLM says that it's ok to fit illegal lights to yer motor cos he did it so that makes it ok and stuff anyone else who has to put up with being dazzled by em'.

Did you read the links?

All you gotta do is make it uncomfortable for other road users (even pedestrians) and you can be prosecuted.

You MUST NOT
  • use any lights in a way which would dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders

surely everything nowadays it built around statistics? and I cant find no statistics of people being killed by hids

you must not also
speed
drive without proper documentation
drive whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs

how many statistics are there on them?

still believe mountain---molehill

With the penalty being 5 years in prison I'll air on the side of caution thanks.

Fitting HID's to a vehicle without self levelling lights and no washers is illegal.

And it still might get through an MOT OK, depends of the tester.

Its is often over looked, because as everyone has quite rightly pointed out, its not the end of the world fit HID to a vehicle, whether its ready for it or not.

But if it came down to it, say killing some one, the insurance companies would explore all avenues to get out of the claim, and similarly the Police would look at any thing to prosecute...

Same thing with tow-bars;
people without correct trailer licences,
loud exhausts
blacked out windows
stuff hanging from your review mirror
tyres not as manufacturer spec

the list goes on.....

I have first hand experience of this, they are ruthless. Any thing incorrect or slightly amiss will be brought against you.

Unless your lucky.

You are correct however the point I made earlier in the thread was this has only been in force since 2010, all conversions before this using E marked items were 100% legal, this is why they pass the MOT as no MOT center can prove date on installation. A build sticker post 2010 is not enough to say when a light was fitted as if the conversion has been done you can replace like for like, if a part goes faulty you can keep the HiD conversion by using newer parts.

Unless the police can prove when the installation was done there is no way for them to prosecute, we are innocent till proven guilty, it is the job of the prosecution to prove that they were fitted post 2010 and not the individuals to prove the opposite.

As has been mentioned though as HiD's are a lot brighter its essential that beam pattern and direction is spot on otherwise the dazzle, that said any halogen bulb will dazzle if the lights are not set up, I reckon half the cars that get MOT'd, if not more, need headlight adjustments so its not just HiD's that blind people.

Oh OK I didn't know it came into affect in 2010, you're right it would be impossible to prove legally. So its a good idea unless your Defender was registered after the date in 2010 when it was made law.

And you are right again, incorrectly set up lights are annoying. If you're going to go through with the effort of fitting them, they should at least be set up correctly.
