I am a complete Land Rover virgin and a mechanical numpty. Just bought a 1990 Defender 90 for dogging activities (no not that kind!)

So I bought some Freestyle wheels on ebay and had them delivered to my mate at his garage.

Problem 1 ...tyres were rubbish and not as described
Problem 2 ....needed new wheel nuts

Sorted these so one week later I tunr up to put them on using his facilities and they don't fit. Fine on the back but not on the front. They seem to catch on the hub and won't sit flush.

Help needed!

A search will reveal all the known problems about fitting alloys to earlier vehicles.

There are various options open to you but if you wanted to keep the wheels and also fit the centre-cap then spacers will do the job. Just make sure you inform your insurance company first, most won't even make a charge for this but they have to be on your policy to avoid problems in the event of a claim. The other option is to stick with steel rims or aftermarket alloys which fit the earlier axles.

Fitted them on my 1986 90, used spacers on the front and popped out the centres on all four. Wheel spacers seem to be pretty expensive, but got some new ones off eaby for about £20 and seem to be perfect.

you need 5mm spacers on the front
rear is fine due to the drums alredy been 5mm thik
there is some on ebay for £20 but there aloy
id rather fit steel ones my self but if you go down the alloy route make shure you regularly chek your wheel nuts

I cant help, but Id recommend putting details of your LR's age, engine etc into your signature which then shows at the bottom of your posts (see mine). Do this via UserCP at the top of the page.

We can all then see exacctly what LR you have and you may get help quicker.:)

Thanks

Its a Defender 90 200tdi registered 1990.

I don't understand why the back ones fit and the front don't. After all the current steel spare fits both so surely they must be the same.

Spacers have been suggested...any thoughts anyone

they are different because you have drums at the back and discs at the front  the steel wheel fits over the hub where the alloys have a recess for the nuts to fit but they are not large enough for the older 90s & 110s

you got your answer from rock-sliders, spacers are pretty much your only option. The only other option would be to replace the front hubs. if funds are tight get the 5mm spacers but check your wheel nuts regularly.

yes I saw that but the only ones I can see are from thenutsandboltsshop and although they say they are universal they are alloy and I am not sure they will fit. When i asked them they said they "wouldn't fit OEM wheels".
