Hi Gents
My gearbox seems to have 'gone'...brilliant timing too just as my vans PAS has 'gone' too...triffic

Im fairly handy around a spanner...can you tell me if its manageable to change the gear/ transfer box on my own (I realise the weight will be challenging)? And can anyone recommend somewhere to buy one from ?

BTW, notes:
I have an overdrive on it
Chassis is a chopped 90 with a taken out the middle and added on the end so it might drop out rather than lift out?

Oh and anyone local to Newbury, Berkshire who might want to do it for beer tokens?

cant you hire an engine crane ?the hardest bit is removing seat box especially the corner bolots holding seat belt brackets so if will lower out the bottom so much the easier,fewer people rebuild them as they are getting less cost effective

Hi, no problem changing g'box on series on your own but easier with a mate.

Make it easier by emptying all oil from main and t'fer box and remove o'drive.
I leave g stick on until box removed to aid handling.
As previous reply hardest bit is removing rusted bolts for seat box - get new st steel replacements from screwfix or similar much easier next time box comes out.
Put a small piece of wood between bottom of flywheel housing and chassis x memeber as engine will drop when gbox removed.
A good strop or rope around middle of main g'box, stand/sit astride box and gentle lift and pull back and box comes off easy, lower to ground onto an old carpet/rug to make it easier to drag out is what I did.

Easy mate, I'm 50 and lifted mine out in the bad weather, not as heavy as you think,seat box is a pain though,save yourself the hire charge!!!!

You must be a horse, I find series transmissions extremely heavy and awkward to move, and thats just around the workshop.

he may be exaggerating a bit

I moved one round myself the other week and it has to be a good 130kg built up with x'fer and oil

Doable but awkward as you say

More than doable. If you don't plan to replace the transfer (gearbbox only) it's much easier - I am 55 and just finished doing one myself with no use of an engine crane. And I am no horse...

Do make up a set of guide pins to put into 4 of the bearing stud holes - it makes alignment so much easier when it comes to putting in the new gbox.

It can be done in a weekend - the work is all straightforward and if you follow the instructions in the manual there are no particular gotchas.
