Will be getting my heated windscreen wired up soon, having just puchased the wiring loom/timer/relay kit. I need to think about where to put the switch. Im guessing I need a Carling switch? Or at least a swith that you just have to press once?

I dont want to fit a Mud/Raptor console for just one switch, so was wondering if I could fit it under the dashboard, perhaps where this red switch is?

Don't see why not

Think mine has got a removable blanking plate already there, so should be easy to substitute.

How you thinking of running the wiring to the back?
 
I think that location is for the fuel tank changeover switch so should be fine for using for the screen heater.

The position you're proposing for the switch is a good one

If I read your question correctly, you're looking for a non-latching switch to fit in this position?

If so, the late 300Tdi and early TD5 (pre-2002) Defenders use a non-latching rear fog lamp switch in the bank of 3 switches (the actual switching of the rear fog lamp is done by a small Black Box ECU behind the instruments), this switch would fit into the position under the instrument binnacle.

As you can't see the switch's face in this position, it wouldn't matter too much that it had the wrong symbol on it. The symbol on these switches is engraved into the plastic and filled with white paint, this could be easily blacked-out.

Depending on the age of your Defender, there may also be some unused positions on the instrument warning lights, which you could use as a 'tell-tale' for your heated windscreen.

Thanks Paul. Im not sure what 'non latching' means, but I assume that when the switch is pressed then it needs to return straight back to its off position, leaving the timer/relay to sort everything else out?

My Defender is a 1996 110 300tdi and Im having the heated screen connected by a professional auto-electrician, but Im providing the parts. I already have the wiring kit, but I need to buy a switch and tell him where I want it putting. I would like to use a Carling switch, but I doubt there is anywhere to fit a switch of this size.

So are you saying that if I buy another 'rear heated screen switch' then this will do the trick?

Non-latching is, exactly as you said - when the switch is pressed, it makes a momentary circuit and springs back to the 'off' position.

Which should be what you need with a timer relay.

No, not a heated rear screen switch, these 'latch' - i.e. when pushed, they stay in the 'on' position until pushed again.

The rear fog lamps switch, as used with the 'One-Touch' ECU, doesn't latch.

YUE100530 - SWITCH-REAR FOG MOMENTARY - from (V)WA138480


I would go for the later one, as it says that it's momentary.

I've just looked at the 'One-Touch' ECU in Microcat - it says that it was fitted from (V)VA104806 - so either switch should be OK

Sorry to revive an old thread, but was wondering, hiven I have a read heasted screen can I not wire a new heated front screen to the existing rear screen heating switch and have them both on the same switch? I cannot right now think of why I would need them to be independent?
 
No issue with 1 switch operating both screens as long as they are independently controlled by separate fuses and relays (one switch feed two relays one of which is front screen with own fused positive)
