As well as the manifold I would remove the intercooler & flush that along with all the pipes & hoses with it. If it hasn't been done you'll be surprised, along with the manifold, how much oil/sludge builds up in the 'system' helping it smoke, all the best.

Use the fuel cleaner as suggested above and make sure you take it a good run before MOT, get it nice and hot
Good advice along with the manifold EGR and MAP clean, give it a good ten mile run on the day of the MOT thrashing the living daylights out of it, an Italian tune arriving 5 minutes before you MOT is due the engine will nice and hot giving the best smoke reading

I have two FL2 and drop a bottle of this in twice a year once in the spring and then Autumn, reason why i buy four.

You can just go for one or two.

That’s a good price (for 4)

thanks Andy - will do - as a matter of interest what chemical solvents do you use/ recommend ?

We used this stuff on a BMW 120D (same engine as FL1) when her turbo failed. It also seems to work well on oily silencers.

As others have suggested, adding additives to the tank before an MOT can help. I fill up with a tank full of the more expensive super diesel and give the car a good blast in the days running up to its MOT. By a good blast I don’t mean flat out down a motorway, simply red-line it a few times in low gear. If an auto, just run it in sports mode for a few days and drive it like you stole it.
My FL2 is approaching a quarter million miles, the EGR has been blocked off for years, and has had no problem with smoke at MOT time.
