My Ninety has a 200 tdi fitted and has 200 tdi radiator setup. Decided to put a replacement radiator in which was a britpart. Got it all fitted in started it up and could hear this gurgling sound. Before i realised it half my engine oil was on the floor:mad: Ithought i had done up those oil cooler fixings tight enough. Did not want to go over tight cause of the plastic tanks. What a numpty!!!!!!!!

Thinking about it should i have put thread tape on the oil connectors? is that standard practice? Still seems to be weeping a bit but that could be just residue from the big dump it had and covered the front chassis and cross member. Like i said, dont want to put too much tension on the plastic bits.

pipe to union is sealed by an o ring ,union to rad either a washer or taper ,silicone or tape may help taper types

My pipe to union fit seemed to be like a brake pipe fitting dont remember seeing "O" ring in there wonder if i never saw it and its dropped out, will check:jaw:

earlier pipe fittings are like that ,later use o rings

Just been out and looked at the old radiator. Where the pipe fits into the rad there is a taper so i assumed it was like a brake pipe fitting. Looking at the haynes manual i can see the type of fitting with an "O" ring where there is a sleeve and collar on the pipe that the "O" ring butts up against, well its definately not that type of fitting. One thing i did not do was check the type of fitting on the new radiator, just swapped them over. Looks like i will have to crack the top connector tonight and check

there should be an adapter (union)in between rad and pipe which part leaks ,pipe to adapter sometimes need slackening and adjusting some to get good seal ,rad to adapter can be sealed with silicone or tape

Its hard to tell where its coming from cause now its covered in oil.. i will crack the joints tonight and tape it up. i had put hylomar on when i first done it.
Cheers

i used an after market radiator with a plastic oil tank aswell
didnt want to put to much pressure on incase i broke it so i just went a little at a time and kept slcakening it back of then go a little more and managed to get it tight enougth without breaking anything did feel like i was going to tho
i have tapered fittings on my oil pipes

Well what a wally:frusty: When will i learn to check. If you look at the fitting thats gold coloured thats the one that came on the new radiator, the silver one is the one that was on my old radiator. So what i did by mistake was try to fit my tapered pipes onto a fitting that is for "O" rings. What i have now done is take my fittings off the old radiator and put them on the new with thread tape. All ok now. Thats why new radiators come with the fittings not done up. Thanks for the responses and getting the thought process going. MEMO TO SELF, PAY MORE ATTENTION.

Cheers

so i have the same issue, went to fit the oil cooler pipes just now and noticed that they are the other type. however, the oil cooler is not threaded. there is a lock nut holding the brass pipe to the plastic housing, when i undid this water pished out. ergo, the coolant housing is not threaded. damnit. does anyone know if there is an adapter from the washer style to the tapered style?

thanks. LB

I did similar.
Overtighterned the fitting and then cracked the plastic inner housing, when I tried to undo it.
What made it worse, I left the bottom oil cooler hose connected and the coolant drained into the sump via it.

Ended up buying a champion rad off ebay. Much better quality fittings.
Good luck.
I still have the old britpart rad if you need any parts to try and fix yours, but sounds like it fooked.

i have tried to find replacement pipes and apparently they are like hens teeth. i am half tempted to go to a plumbers merchants and try to get a reducer to go from the new thread to the interior thread of the lug from the old rad. any thoughts on whether the pressure in the system would be too much for that?

thanks,

LB

problem solved, i called paddocks and they are sending out adapters free of charge. i count that as a win. thanks for the help chaps.
