I suspect the rear doors only drop half way to stop people's kids jumping out the window. Most cars do that, hence why I suspect it's normal.

As for the front one, I'll see what's behind the door card when I have time.

If it was a standard fault that Disco front windows only dropped that much, it might save me investigating, but on the basis that they are supposed to and it's not a common fault, i'll check it out...

is the glass loose mate? ie, when half way down can you lift the glass freely, or does it seem to be fixed into the mechanism?

i had a 200 once that had a loose glass, the glass had jumped out of the holder and sat next to it on the mechanism. basically it worked fine, but was loose and was too high up when fully dropped

the D1 glass is just pushed into the holder, so it can come out if droppe when frozen etc.

will be an easy fix cos d1 window regulators are mechanical, and thus dead simple.

cheers

good point... no idea... and i won't try pulling it until i've got the door card off! lol

that's a good point though... i'll let ya know!

jamesmartin - thank you for the bolts and O rings! Got them today!

One problem though... the O ring would need to be stretched really quite a lot to actually fit on the breather and the bolt seems to be smaller than the thread in the side of the engine (i.e. it just pushes in and pulls out).

Any ideas??

Thanks for the offer, James, but I'm broke atm! Please don't send it!

I'll happily pay you for the bolts & O rings (cos it's easier than posting them back), but I really don't even have a fiver spare atm!

I can't drive for 2 weeks now anyway, so it's not urgent. I think I'll have to wait til then...

Plus, if the O ring is too small and the bolt is too small, I don't think a new cyclone will help, if you know what I mean...

um... no thank you!!

the thread looks OK from what I can make out... it's just as if the bolt is too small!

And is the O ring supposed to be really stretched once it's on the cyclone or is it supposed to slide on nicely?

mate, how hard can it be to go to b&q and select the correct bolt?

if its not m6 maybe someone has tapped it out to M8?

its not the end of the world is it?

no, its not hard... lol, but i can't drive atm (broken finger).

i was going to buy one from my local hardware store, but james said he'd post me one (which he did!) :D

The O ring is the part i need most. my local Landy dealer doesn't stock them. I have the two from james, but they're pretty damn stretched once they're on.

Doesn't matter how stretched they are tbh, as long as they sit slightly proud of the shaft around which they are fitted and they fit snug into the hole to which the shaft is inserted, then you will be alright.

As for the bolt, take a good look at how oversize the hole is, do you think there could be 2mm gap between the outside of the threads on the bolt and the outside of the threads in the hole?

M8 bolts normally have a 13mm hex head. See if you can borrow a bolt from elsewhere in your engine bay and see if it fits.

From memory the bolts which hold the bonnet to it's hinges are M8. removing one of them will not affect things if the other is tight.

Give that a try and see what happens. Be very careful, if it goes in one or two turns then tightens up, it is likely the thread is wrong.

Just an idea to play with anyway...

right... an update on the stupid cyclone breather saga...

the bolts jamesmartin sent me both push in and pull back out of the hole in the engine block.

The O ring jamesmartin sent me will go onto the breather (it's a bit stretched though), and sits very proud of the breather surface. To get it to go into the hole it would need several screwdrivers around it to force it in. There's no way it'll push in by itself. I know it's supposed to be a tight fit, but two hands just isn't enough to force it in.

Therefore, the breather is still hanging off the side of the engine.

I borrowed an M6 bolt from work, and it does screw into the hole a little better, but it's a bit wobbly until it's 4 or 5 turns in. This suggests that the thread is starting to go in the engine block. It has definitely not been tapped out to M8, for example.

So... I phoned Marshall's Land Rover here in Cambridge. They can sell me an O ring (for comparison), part number LLO100000, but they don't keep the bolts in stock, so i'd have to buy a pack of 5, part number FB106111L.

Plus, i'd have to drive there to order them, and then drive there again to pick them up.

So... i'm kinda stuck again. This is not a difficult problem, but it does seem to be for me.

I don't really have the money to buy a pack of bolts from screwfix just to see if they fit, nor do I have a clue how to get the O ring on. I don't have any PTFE tape either, although I guess I could buy some. I'm paranoid about it ending up inside the engine though, rather than wrapped around the O ring slot.

So... I'm not after advice necessarily, just giving an update.

I will get this breather reattached eventually...

mr fishsponge i think it might help if i send you complete used rocker box and cyclone ,then you send me yours ill fix it ,pm me you address i can get it to you tuesday

that's not an option at the moment, i'm afraid... i have no money (and won't do for months) and i don't have the time to change a rocker box over either... (even if it does take just an hour)...

i thank you for the offer though... and might take you up on it in the future!
