Hello all,
First time landy owner here so apologies if i ask the obvious questions, so please go easy 🤣!
Bought and collected a 1989 Defender 90 with a 200tdi engine at the weekend as a on going project! Already changed the headlight and tinted the rear windows so it doesnt feel so much like being in a gold fish bowl...

Look forward to chatting with you all in the future!

Hi and welcome!

Very tidy looking Landy! I’ve got a 90 of the same age with a 200Tdi.😁
It looks tidy from a far, theres a few bits i need to touch up and sort, need to sort a new rear door as it has rusted away quite badly on the bottom bar on the frame but the door skin is still in good nick thankfully.

Post a couple of photos of your engine bay, always interesting to see other conversations.
Here you go, not managed to tidy it up as it seems to been left in a mess when i got it. It doesnt seem to have an air filter so i assume the previous owner had a snorkel with a mushroom filter on top but removed it as there are threaded holes on the A pillar on the passenger side.

Looks like a copy of mine when I got it!

Yes you certainly need an air filter.
Does it have a radiator fan?
Looks like the wiring needs a bit of attention.
Cambelt change and a good service of all fluids, keep you busy for a while.
Has it been sat around for a while?

Apologies for the late respons been mega busy, and the app notifications dont seem to be working...
So after reading though all the docs and invoices i got with it in a folder, there is an invoice for a Raised air intake/snorkel kit from bolt on bits in there amoung other things which i can only assume thats why the oem airbox was removed...

It does have a rad fan, however its on a separate switch, although it doesnt seem to get hot enough, i drove it most of the day on sunday over the woodhead and the snake pass and it didnt budge over half way on the temp guage.

I have literally just ordered new belts for it, had to tighten the alternator one up yesterday as that was squealing like a pig. As for the service, it was serviced by TandT motors before i bought it, or so im lead to believe, the oil filter looks brand new so that gives me hope that they have changed it, but i might get it done anyway just for my piece of mind.

Quite a bit of play in the steering so im going to have a go at tightening that up on the steering box too.

Before you adjust the steering box you need to check all ball joints and drop arm, steering column ujs etc.
Manual will tell you the proper way of adjusting the steering box, pretty sure you can damage it otherwise.
Just so you know I doubt temp gauge is correct so don't rely too much on it.

Ahhh oki doki, ill make sure im careful, i have a work colleague who has had plenty of defenders over his 40years of driving so he is giving me a hand with things im not sure on, and i shall keep that in mind going forward, I have a feeling the fan is somehow connected to the headlights wiring loom as when its on the dipped beam flickers quite a bit, but the DRL ring is perfectly fine which is wired into the side lights so ill be investigating it further when i get a free weekend!

Might be poor earth but you never know with other people wiring.
I have been lucky as my TD5 90 is pretty much stock and the previous owner hasn't messed around with it.
My son's Tdi conversion is pretty much stock, sort of.

Yeaaaa it was a bee's nest behind the headlights, iv had to rewire most of it as i found stuff like this when i pulled the lights out... which iv put right and soldered in new connections. Its fine until i start driving, then it starts to flicker when i get above 10-15mph which i find odd
