Hi folks,

I'm new on the forum, and a relatively new Land Rover owner. Last week I took my first long(ish) journey in my 1984 Series III (2.25 petrol). From Birmingham to Scotland and back - about 600 miles total. She did it, with almost no complaints! But it sucked the life out of her, and she died as soon as she'd completed her job and got me home. Cough, sputter, spit...done. I'm very thankful she got me home, and now I need to patch her up, and I need some help!

She'd just got a pretty intensive service from Liveridge, to the tune of £1,200, which actually didn't include a tune up, but did include a new Weber. She was running OK, and I'd done most of the electrics prior - including points, coil, etc. I thought she was in pretty good shape for the trip. But towards the end, she was lacking lots of power, stalling at idle, sputtering, and backfiring...like she was running too rich...way too rich. At the end, she wouldn't run at all at low rpms and I had to keep her revving and slipping the clutch to nurse her home after I came off the motorway.

I finally nosed around today and pulled the plugs (among other checks). They were thick with black carbon. My theory is that running up and down the M6 at 98% throttle for most of the trip is the source of my woes, and maybe the fuel air mixture wasn't right and she built up too much carbon black - although I could be completely wrong. I brushed off the plugs and things were better, but she's still around 50% power at low rpms, improving as rpms build.

So what do I try next? Should I just do a full tune up (a first for me), assuming she kinda fell outta tune during the trip? Run some alcohol through the system?

Would be great to get some advice on extended motorway running as well...from the you brave lot out there!

I had a lot of fun...hoping to do it again!

Thanks,
Aaron

Well it certainly sounds on first hearing carb' related or timing or..........er, my first question is what on earth did you get done totalling £1200!

& out of interest & kinda related, any idea what kind of MPG you were getting on the trip?

Well, I almost got a divorce for that £1,200!

Apart from that, there was a whole raft of things apart from the new carb: seals, shock absorber, hand brake service, full waxoil, new swivel balls and front bearings, a bit of welding, etc. The MOT would have been around £500, and I opted for a few big extras that needed doing. The guys at Liveridge were good, but I must say that it doesn't seem like to the cheapest place to get work done.

As for miles per gallon...well, I was averaging about 160 miles per 30 liters, running the numbers...ummm...24 mpg...sheesh, that's good! I've got freewheeling hubs and overdrive as well. Cruising speed about 54 mph.

Planted a tree once i got to Scotland to cover my carbon footprint. (Not really.)

mite be worth giving them a call - a new fixed jet Weber shouldnt go out out of tune that quick (if at all).

Cheap for a divorce! ;)

24mpg fer a petroil III IS good even with the overdrive (the weight of the hubs probably negated any savings on drag mind(we're not generally great fans of them on here - If you keep them engage them once in a while to swish a bit of lube about)..........Doesn't indicate mahoosive overfuelling either. Timing?

Gotta say tho', £600 notes for mainly bolting bits on is pricey.........Don't you got any spanners?

Oh, yeah one of those crap cameras where you have to actually push a button with marginally more force than an arthritic pensioner can muster?

see - yu admit it - yu KNEW it was more than a sensitive peep like me could manage before you gave it to me.

You trying to make me look silly - so yu look better. Others will know who is the innocent party here.
