Well, had my first green laning experience over the weekend! There’s a byway near us which, having looked around, appears to still be open – certainly no physical blockages or notices at either end of the lane? There were relatively fresh tracks as well by the looks of it.

So, took the Rangie down there, about 2-2.5 miles long in total, which was plenty as we were on our own. It got pretty tight in places, the Rangie only just fitting through some gaps (knocked the mirrors in on a tree too, they touched on BOTH sides so pretty tight)! Only bit I didn’t like was the noise holly bushes make as you scrape past – awful!! No damage though.

Good fun though – only used low range once on a particularly steep and flooded climb, but the rest of it was all in D and high-ratio and coped fine.

Just waiting for my mate to get his act together and get his Disco (anyone got a good ‘un for sale for less than £1k?) and then we can go explore a bit further afield!!

am a great believer in learning from your own mistakes, so will let someone else have the pleasure

If you get stuck you are buggered. always go out in tandem at minimum.........on your own not even a rape alarm will help you!!!

A legend in his own lunchtime .

we went out for a few lanes on saturday afternoon - what started off as busting through a snow drift (took a few attempts in my modified disco) tuened into an hours recovery operation to get a stock disco through tht was beached oun a mound of compacted snow in the middle of the drift.

took two vehicles with winches to ease it through the drift, plus snow shovelling.

if there had been two cars out on that trip it would have been serious trouble, as the first car wasnt able to get round the second car to pull it backwards.

as night drew in i started thinking all ray mears, but we got it through after an hour or so and carried on our adventure.

at least we cleared the way for others, but its amazing how easily you can get proper stuck on something insignificant when youre not at a pay and play site.

cheers, sam

Yes I know, but his house is only at the bottom of the road and I know a couple of local farmers we could call on! But yet, point made, won't do it again ;)

Think I'd rather pay & play days anyway - I think i'm LESS likely to get it all scratched up then!!

the only place id go laning on me own is round rochdale and surrounding areas as i know evry lane round there like th hole in me arse as i know nearly all the farmers n land owners round those parts many of whom dont particularly use those lanes anymore and i always make sure they know im there before i do often theyll ask me to shift a fallen tree n give me a chainsaw for the privelage of useing their land or ask me to re tag a couple of sheep while im up that way never been stuck yet

on the other hand i wouldnt go exploring new lanes without another vehicle there coz thats just askin fer trouble :D:D:D:D:D

**** the lot of ya.stick in yer mtb and lane away.i go out on my own all the time who gives a fook......ha ha ha.ill burn no doubt.
YEAH **** IT.Been laning in a 306, festa, ford transit minbus all on me own, me office is even down a byway but i dont meet up with people before driving it.Common sense will be the decider.
That sed its much more fun to go with people.

Not all lanes do you have to go with more than one car...a bit of tame green lane close to civilisation is not exactly living on the edge is it! But if you do get stuck, prepared for people to point fingers, laugh, or say "I told you so" or perhaps all 3!

i think that its ok to go out on your own as long as you have the right recovery equipment ie winch with all the equipment to help ie waffles prt ect and if you think its to hard just turn around
