Hi, I'm approaching my 17th birthday and I would like to buy a Defender for my first car. I would preferably like a 90 station wagon, with a 200Tdi engine.
I would also one with big off road tyres.

As I am quite new to this, i would be very appreciative of any advice, about what to look out for ect.

Thanks, Ollie

what's your budget and have you included insurance costs Into the equation. a 200tdi 90 is going to cost you about £2,000 to £3,000 and the insurance is going to cost you a minimum of £1k

My budgets a max of around £4500 including insurance, I was thinking of getting a quote of the NFU as I heard they would be cheaper for a Land Rover than a regular insurance company.

nfu wont insure an 17 18 year old well they wouldnt insure me

Ivington about 3 and abit miles out of Leominster. :)

ah i see :D

if i were you id get on go compare and get some qoutes as landys at are age ent cheap to insure mate, i had to give it a year in a 1.3 polo to get my years no claims:mad: and i still pay 1850 on a defender 90 200 tdi

NFU hate 17 year olds, the only way they will do it is if an existing customer has a policy with them. From our experience of under 25 and nfu on commercial vehicles:eek: They will leave it upto local managers discretion.

Unless you have deep pockets, you may want to consider something else to build ncd on first

On go compare, the quotes for a 1.2 clio or something like that were around £2700 and a 90 200Tdi was about £2500.

Buy a £50 rotbox group1 car and insure that in your name & put the landy on ya parents/older siblings insurance and go named driver. & hope ya don't have a prang in the 90.

good if you own a few not so good if you want to buy one i guess:p

Where would you recommend getting one from? I have looked on auto trader and there are quite a few, but i'm not sure what to look out for in terms of problems or faults. :)

Take someone who knows with you, auto trader or brightwells auctions

try ebay :D well basically rust is the main killer of defenders but most repair panels are availible and with the right no how easy to change, basically check all the chassis well, the bulhead top corners inside and out,the floor pans (under the mats) and have a good drive in it, if you cant yet drive get your parents to drive it, as for the tdi engine there bullet proof if looked after well :D check for blue smoke when running,(a puff of black is normal on start up as long as it clears after a few seconds)

im pretty sure i have seen a buyers guide some where on here ile have a look for it now

Okay thanks, :) I think i will go down to Brightwells to have a good look at what they've got and to get an idea how much they go for.

I was originally going to go with quinn because they were consuderabbly cheaper than anyone else, but they have gone into administration and aren't accepting any new policies. :(
