I've not managed to update my thread on here in a while as I've been busy getting the Disco through it's MOT (which turned out to be more expensive than expected, but that's another story...)

Tonight, however, saw my first breakdown in it, as she threw off the serpentine belt on the M3. The reason for this was that one of the pulleys had sheared completely off!

The pulley in question was the smooth one between the alternator and the crankshaft (300TDi) - am I right in thinking this is the PAS pump?

If so, is it easy to change? Is there anything I should look out for? or anything else that is worth changing at the same time?

I didn't manage to get any photos, as it was too dark...

Many thanks!

yes easy enough, slacken pulley bolts before you remove belt, and its easier to undo the 4 bolts holding pump then remove pipes and refit with pump hanging loose

well, as the pulley is already off it will make life easier:D the pumps are about a hundred quid.before you disconnect the pipe work.clamp the flexi ones as near to the pump as possible. it reduces the amount of fluid loss.i did ours in about 1 1/2 hours so not too bad. when you get the pully off the remains of the shaft check to make sure there is no damage.and do remember to put it back the right way. mine was marked to front.

hope this helps.

So as per usual this is turning out to be much harder than expected - the parts turned up on Monday, and with a bit of free time last night I tried to fix it, and immediately hit the first stumbling block - I can't get the viscous fan off! Without the belt, it just spins freely, and I can't get enough friction by trying to tension the belt by hand.

Any suggestions? Can you get the pump out without removing the fan? Is there another clever trick to it?

you are trying to undo it the right way I hope, remember its a left hand thread and you need to go anti-clockwise. I normally put the spanner on and give it a gentle whack with a mallet and off it comes

Hi sorry I'm new here and having a few pas pump problems of my own. You say it's a left hand thread so is that not a clockwise direction to undo.

Managed to get the fan off in the end - I wrapped the old belt around the pulley and gripped it as tightly as possible with a pair of mole grips, then wedged them against the block, which gave enough purchase to stop the pulley turning...
