I believe it was just painted the same colour and type as the rest of the car...then covered in a soundproofing material.

yep. same paint colour as body, then soundproofing, then oil & grease . . . . plus road muck.

Cannot see mine for the soundproofing?

I'd probably put that Hammerite metal paint on if I wasn't going to use the original colour but Plastikote metal is probably OK.

Hard to imagine it could give much sound proofing but I'm all ears.

Intriguing. The transmission tunnel would be a nice place to try it for the manual box.
