if there's enough heat there to have set the ali alight you really need to be as far away as possible - and be thinking about where you'll be buying your new landy from
yep, just thought I'd mention it though, cause lots of peeps possibly think they gonna put it out with little thing they carry in car. nothing like being for warned.

I've got a three storey house, so jumping from the windows is a bit daunting.

However, the landing zone has a Disco in it to break your fall, Starsky and Hutch style ;)

close the bedroom door, seal the bottom using a sheet or similar to help stop the fire gases coming in and call 999 - there's very few people who are more than 15 minutes away from a fire station and most doors, even the cheap internal ones, will be able to hold back the gases until they arrive - stay on the phone to control and let them know which window to pitch to

We are 2 minutes WALK from the fire station :)

Until they close it to save money :(

Good points though Sean. I know the fire safety stuff, but my kids are now at an age where I should be telling them rather than them relying on a parent to help them.
Even a 6 year old can know to shut the door and throw their duvet at the bottom - or better still, know to wake their parents up because we can sleep through anything

do your windows open, can you drop to the floor without damaging yourself - what if you have kids in another rooms across the landing, would they know what to do ?

I live in the middle of a terrace of 15 houses on a footpath with no vehicular access. The nearest the fire brigade can get a pump is about 400yds away.

The neighbour 2 doors down had an electrical house fire in the actual circuit box 18 months ago. Due to the location of the fire the power could not be cut by flicking the trip switches. We were the only house on the rank to have fire extinguishers. I used to have 2 halon and 1 powder extinguisher in the house. Luckily I had the 2 powder extinguishers from landy in the house too as I had only bought the current landy a couple of months previous and was still in the process of sorting the back of it out so hadn't installed them.

The 3 small powder extinguishers kept it under control until the fire brigade got there and then again until the electricity board got there

I have an open fire which is also my only source of central heating (still not got the aga in yet:eek:). This means I have a higher risk than most of having a fire. Since the scare with the neighbours and the realisation that I live in a rank of houses where nobody has extinguishers I decided it'd be wise to stock up a little.

I now have as follows....

1.5 kg halon in the kitchen
2 Imp chimney cleaner sachets next to front room fireplace (in case of chimney fire)
9 litre water in front room/diner
6 kg powder in front room/diner
2kg CO2 in my bedroom break glass hammer and claw hammer on the window ledge.(non opening window). The window leads out to flat roof with a 10ft drop to ground from flat roof.
6kg powder in bedroom 2
1.5kg halon in bedroom 3
9 litre water in the loft room

I need to get 3 fire blankets too really. I have one in the caravan and one in the landy but not in the house.

yu forgot to mention a large supply of water outside :D.

When a neighbour set fire to another neighbours tree last year the firebrigade wanted to use the water in my pond. They told me to stick the fish in the bath. As I don't have a bath and even if I did some of the fish are about 5 or so feet long I don't think they woulda had much room to move.:doh::doh:

I told em to let the feckin tree burn.:D:D:D

What ****ed me off is that the tree was in the garden of the house nearest the hydrant. And the river somer was only 30ft away at the bottom of the garden.:p

legally allowed to take water from wherever as long as it's use can be justified

there's a been a good few swimming pools emptied round here ;)

The river was only 30ft from the tree. The fire hydrant was about 75ft. My garden was about 300ft.:p

2 of em had walked down the footpath from one end while the pump went around the other end. I was quite happy to point out the hydrant and the river as soon as they threatened to nick my pond water.;):eek::eek:

hydrant upkeep and location knowledge used to be all part of a FFs duty - these days a couple of men in a van slowly drive round the county checking hydrants - the problem being that when the big red fun bus turns up the 2 bods who will have checked your hydrant will be fast asleep in bed as they'll work for whatever company came up with the lowest quote for their maintenance - so no fecker who is actually going to be using them knows where they are

always a good plan to know where your nearest hydrant is - 10" high H on a yellow background with the diameter and distance

Just outta curiosity how would I stand with trumpton draining my pond to put out a fire? It's got around £3k's worth of fish in it including 5ft long 'dangerous' fish that cannot be released into the waterways.

onhh ohhh do i get a gold star for having a 'what to do in case of fire plan' :D:D i get daughter, hubs gets boy, if we can get out we go out front door and phone 999 when out side, if we can't get down stairs it's into boys room because porch roof is underneath his window.
