Hey guys!

My name is Emil and I've always wanted an Defender 110 so I've decided to buy an Ex Mod.

My first plan was to buy it from Withams but the thing is that I live in Sweden and the total price for getting it here is about 1600GBP if I get it shipped and "only" about 600GBP if I drive it myself! But I cant buy one of theirs and drive it home cause I cant get it registered in my name cause I'm not a resident of the UK..

So I basically need to buy that has already been registered so I wanted to check if you guys have any sites that you can recommend, both private owned and dealers are of interest :)

Hi

Have you contacted Withams for advice?

All their prices are listed as 'subject to UK VAT unless sold outside of the EU', but I don't know if that means you have to be a UK citizen in the first place

Just found their website states:

'We welcome all types of buyers from the UK and around the world. We are happy to sell individual vehicles or quantities'

Is the issue more about Day 1 registration to make it road legal to drive? If you can't, borrowing a trailer might be the lower cost answer

The VAT is not a concern, you just pay that to them when you buy the vehicle

Yea, cause it is directly bought from the MOD it has to first be registered to be road legal and cause I'm a Swedish citizen I cant get it register in the UK, thats what your DVLA said when I contacted them..

And that is why I thought I would try and find one that has been already been registered so I can just fly over and drive it home

I'm not entirely sure what the registration process involves, but I think that it is fairly painless. If you don't have any friends whose address you can use in the UK, you'd be welcome to use mine (or, I suspect, any number of other LandyZone members).

Tjenare Emil,

Normally when my friends come to the UK and buy cars I recommend them to come here and buy a running car (MOT, Taxed, etc) and get an import insurance from your own Swedish insurance company, then drive the car back to Sweden. I recommend them to come with a friend, and then hire a car, so they can drive around to find a vehicle. Once they find the vehicle, I tell them to pay in cash, and get the car right there (no collection later or such). The Harwich-Esbjerg ferry route is about to be closed down (and it was expensive anyway), so the only alternative is to drive.
In your case, the first registration seems to be a problem, so I'd recommend the above method and try to find a vehicle in another way, most likely from a private sales. You could also contact someone like Rugged Guide to see if they have an Ex-MOD that is for sale.
I would also recommend you to pack the car full of spares as I belive they're more expensive in Sweden.
When it comes to bureaucracy, all you have to do when you get the V5 (registration documents) is to mark the vehicle for permanent export and the DVLA is happy with that. When you come to register it in Sweden you should simply be able to register it as is (I don't know if MOD cars will require something special).
There's is a bit of a strangeness with current UK road tax (VED) and to claim it back you need to fill in a form for permanent export. Here is the PDF version of the form from the DVLA website. https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/334329/V756_200614.pdf

I hope that's of any help. :)

phone withams and check as i am pretty sure they can register it for you (they registered mine) in their name then you can pick up and drive it from there, as they can jsut fill out the paperwork when you collect and return to the dvla. by the time the dvla sort themselves out you will be back in sweden

First of all, thank you guys for the respone! :)

That is exacly my plan atm :) And it's also a lot easier to get it registered in Sweden since its gone through the process once already in the UK
But finding one that has be privately owned is not that easy, or I'm I just searching in the wrong places?

Found these sites with some Ex Mods, do you guys know any other ones?

Thanks, need to look into that!

is there a reason you want one from the UK other than it cheaper? Maybe you should look on the continent as the euro to pound is not very good and there is less water to cross :D

I did buy mine from the uk a couple of years ago but i think i would look here first next time.

Well first of all there is no Ex-Mod in Sweden, some in Europe but they are quite expensive thb.. The ones I have found start at 6000GBP and I have found simillar ones for 3-4000GBP in the UK.

How much are you thinking of spending on one, and what sort of spec?

Want an Ex-Mod 110 Hardtop, 2.5N/A, 200 or 300tdi, Rust free is a must! Maximum of 6000GBP, depends on condition and so on :)

I like the one used for training , it has .... Character ?!?! :D

Character is one word for it ;)

AF Ross are on the west coast of Scotland so quite a distance if you were driving back but I've used them for years when I need ex-mod stuff. Their website is

Ex Army Vehicles

Yea quite far up tbh, but I will have a look :)

Seams really hard to find second hand Ex Mods... Then again, I do like a challenge :p
