Looking at some some arches for the disco, there second hand. The chap claims there not fibergalss. How can I be certain what there made from when I go have a look at them?

Look at the inside - fibreglass will look like Shredded Wheat.

Don't be scared about using a grinder.

Just remember you can always cut more out but you can't put it back.
