if your doing a good bit of welding buy some more tips ,are you using an reactive mask
I am, I thought it would be better to have both hands free and be able to see where the tip is before pressing the trigger.

Good pair of gauntlets and a fireproof apron are a sound investment too
I have a pair of thickish leather gardening gloves and to be honest they are a little short. I think when I order the spare tips and shrouds i'll check in a pair of long MIG gloves and an apron.
That all makes sense Rob. From what you describe about the wire speed and looking at the condition of the tip after a 'go' I think you may have nailed it, the arc is certianly cutting in and out. Now you've mentioned it I can see the issue, at the time I was totally confused.
You got to do all the preparation work, and when she's hot and the juices are flowing, you can adjust the power and speed to maximise your penetration!@Oldseadog.
What part of my 1st date do I tweak to get the power and speed adjusted!

if you try and rush things, it ain't going to happen! :d:d:d
this is how i got the youngsters interested when i used to teach welding and fabrication at a local college!

Agree with Evil pushing will give you better gas shielding coverage.
Cant tell for sure if this joint attempt was overlapped or butt welded?
If doing this as a butt weld I would start on 2 (low) and place several tack welds along the joint every few inches. This ensures the heat doesn't pull the work pieces apart as you try to place a run of weld.
Then start to join the tacks up with beads of weld possibly upping the power to 3 (low) Welding two sheets together you should push and also weave / zig zag between the two sheets keeping an eye on how much heat is being generated.
There's nothing wrong with pub gas
He isn't using pub gas, he posted earlier that he was using argoshield
