Hi. Hopefully this will be a nice straight forward one.
I am starting to refit these seals in the driven flange.
I thought they went in with the white felt on the inside and the black rubber bit facing out.
When I looked at how they had been fitted by the previous owner a couple were the other way round.
Which is correct please?
I'm pretty confident that i'm right but you would be amazed at how many times i'm not!

Page 9-F (236 in my series 2 book) says make sure "the oil seal is fitted with the rubber side facing outward"

Thanks for that. I thought it must be like that. The more absorbant side towards the oil and more rubbery side as an outer plug. That also means that the metal washer behind the castleated nut is against the tougher side of the seal.

I'm surprised you haven't got a green book. Like me you're "going in deep"! It is good to have some confirmation especially when it comes to torque settings.

As you're interested in Series 3 Land Rovers why not have a look for a PDF on line? I think I've stumbled on a few. I found one for the series 2 too but not the 2a so I ended up buying one via Amazon. Since buying the Amazon one of course I saw that Paddocks do them too at a slightly better price. Typical...

...and the more familiar you get with a vehicle the more you find is the same for the 2, 2a and the 3...

...now I can't say it was the best money I've ever spent - the official book is a bit "Haynes" and much like many a Haynes manual it has a few conversions from old units to new that ain't correct (so if you're measuring in Newton meters check the conversion first!)

Thanks chaps. I do actually have a pdf copy of the manual but I had actually read it wrong. Having had a second look it does say that the plastic part is fitted adjacent to the driven flange. Must read more carefully in future.
