Anyone else having problems with the newer Landies?
We were told the gearbox on our Defender needed to be replaced in October at just over 40,000 km (2.5 years after purchasing new). We had taken the vehicle in for a clanking noise that sometimes happened when changing gears but it sounded more like something was loose. The service department said it was the gear box and that it was a factory defect. They replaced our gearbox and we couldn't even drive it off the lot properly. They had put the plate on incorrectly and reverse and first were so close together that it was dangerous to shift. After Land Rover Namibia re-adjusted the plate, the new gear box wasn't as good as the old one. Plus, the clanking sound was still there and had not improved in the slightest.
Now, we really are having problems with the gear box (heated up and started making loud noises when driving on a gravel road... after we stopped and it cooled down it now makes an obvious clunk when shifting that one can clearly tell is related to the gears). Land Rover confirms the problem and they tell us we need to replace the gear box again (8,000 km later). They are also telling us we will have to pay 50% since our vehicle warranty expired in January and the new gearbox was only warrantied under the truck warranty, not as a separate unit (even though we were told specifically when it was replaced that we had a year's warranty on the gear box). We are refusing to accept this.
Now the headlights are starting to go (they flicker on and off when driving at night). Essentially, our Land Rover is a piece of crap and we are going to trade it in for a Toyota this month (Yup! True... we are FED UP!). We don't trust getting another Land Rover after this problem and the issues with service. It is just so disappointing.
We hear from others here that the new Land Rover Defenders do really seem to be full of problems and expensive to fix. We are not the only ones. Are any of you familiar with others having these problems? Thanks.
