after trying out new fcr it reads all ecu's except the engine edc reports comms failure 1 any one with ideas thanks newbie

Have you got the right software module fro your EDC? The pre EGR and post EGR use different software. Otherwise suspect the OBD connector. Silly question, I suppose you had the ignition on when you tried it? Can't remember if it needs the engine running.

Which make of Fault Code Reader are you using to read the codes with, a generic model or a branded model specific one???

An FCR is made by Blackbox soloutions.... It is bought ready for a specific model of car and should read and reset all that models ecu's.

I believe the FCR has all the modules built in for a particular car and will lock itself permanantly to the first VIN it's used on, so it should have both doozle ECUs already loaded. If you still can't communicate (ign on, engine doesn't need to be running), then first check on the BlackBox Solutions forum, else post a plea for help there.

thanks for your replies the unit is a bbs fcr 60 bought from bellautos which i have sent them a email with the problem i have updated the unit to the latest 1.8 firmware as suggested by bell and checked battery volts ok (new heavy duty 644 battery) does the diagnostic wiring from edc go straight to obd socket

I often get a comms error on my BBS FCR when reading EDC. Mine is an 99 EGR engine. Just try turning the ignition on and off untill it reads. My OBD socket is OK and has been checked but EDC often gives this error on the first read.
