This weekend sees the beginning of operation gradually-reduce-the-loss-of-various-fluids, a bit of TLC, a new radiator, and addressing 14000 miles of neglected filters by the PO (if the mileage scribbled on the air filter is to be believed). Herein, my bits.....
Had her up on hydraulic ramps a couple of weeks ago, and apart from having to replace a leaking PAS box, the worst seems to be just aged pipes and hoses...and a radiator you could play dueling banjos on
I normally wire brush the threads on drain / fill plugs which don't use a sealing washer, and put a small amount of sealant on the threads before fitting. Probably not needed and not normal for taper threads, but always leak free and I'll keep doing it. So probably others do it too.
Well, I shall share my shame. Believing the filler plug on my Salisbury axle to be tapered, I've just lost my filler plug into the diff I believe I can remove the cover plate and recover without lots of tiny bits pinging all over the place, but does this require a new replacement cover plate? Staying away from it for a full 24 cos this is my first time self-servicing and that was a real "oh my god I've just broken my precious" type moment
Just another job to add to the list. Silly stuff like change the air filter and notice all the rubber mounts are perished. Change the oil breather hoses and find a mounting bracket just hanging on the old pipe. Just fix this little error-ette, new filters, new radiator and then hopefully good to attend first land rover event on Sunday...
Feeling much better this evening, 2 hours of fiddling at awkward rubber mounts and being super careful over removal and refitting of rear axle cover has undone last night's rage and gotten the new air filter in.
So it's done, for now...all filters and fluids changed and a shiny new rad plus some hoses and mountings, and all in time to attend a charity run yesterday in aid of CLIC Sargent. Well worth it.
