abs light has come on on my 1996 disco a little bit of juddering if i press hard on brakes. took it in to kwick fit they have checked discs and brakes they seid they are all fine but they dont work on abs system can anybody give me a rough idea of what i can expect to pay to have the fault diagnosed and if the worst comes to the worst and it needs a new unit

cheers guys

The rate will depend where in the UK you take it and the type of garage... What new unit, we don't know yet.

on average forty odd squid for them to plug it into a PC and tell you the fault, then whatever it costs to fix/replace that bit, could be a sensor needs re seating, could be a new modulator. look at "discovery breaking" on ebay when you find the fault if its expensive brand new.

And by the way welcome to my world my friend, my ABS has been buggered for about 2 years now, i just took the fuse out!

Can you not get a blink code out of the abs? Cheaper than going toa garage and will give you a heads up on where to look for your problem.

see Richards (very helpfull) link and it will explain all you need to know and do. or search through here for 'abs fault disco' and you'll get pretty much every ABS problem asked about and answered.

first thing you need to do is the 'paperclip test' (or 'blink code' test) and this will give you a fault code. then look through the list of fault codes and it will tell you where the fault lies, then either repair it or ask a more specific question on here and somebody will know the cure
