Hi, I'm new to this forum, but not new to Landy's. I have a series 3 Carawagon (camper conversion) and the X reg TD4 freelander which I have had for about 3 years. This is my first diesel.

Plus I am used to working on vehicals which don't have a computer working them.

My freelander has starting playing up. not starting when hot. From reading the forum I have ordered a new cam sensor (£49.18 plus vat for LR stealer) and a new crankcase filter unit (which until I read this forum, didn't know it needed changeing, thanks guys!!!).

But as the last time I took it to the LR stealer to have work done on it. As I dont have a code reader. They charged me £130 for a £5 hose which must of taken all of 10 mins to change! So I want to get a code reader.

Looking on flea bay they have stand alone ones, which basically just tell you the stored codes and reset them for about £30 including postage. Or you can get the laptop models which seem to do a lot more. I have seen one available from London (obviously a China import) "ELM 327". My question after this long ramble is, does anybody know if they are any good??

Hi, I also forgot to ask will the code readers work on a 2000 x reg TD4????? As I've read that they might not work on cars diesel cars made before 2004.
 
er fink it will read generic codes but carn't re set stored fault codes , the OBD11 was introduced after 2003 to most European motors but the Obd system was used in the Bmw injuns. . . .even after 2003 you wont access abs , alarm systems.auto gearbox ,un air bags, oh un doors fall orft mod, as Lr stuck there own bits in. . . . .the cheep hand holds are ok for quick check, but the ELM program running orft a laptop is better. . . .or you could be clever like me un just hack the bastid :D :D :D

Tink I'll go and get a laptop one and give it a go.

Just fitted my new crankcase breather. Cost £22.14 + vat from LR stealer.
Full unit. But if I had just ordered and bought the filter by itself. It would of cost £23.60+vat work that one out?????? Even the guy on the counter was godstruck by that. Also got a new cam sensor and just fitted it. Cost £49.18 + vat. This is the new model from BMW. Both these prices are cheaper than the BMW garage. Both fitted OK and started. Will take it for a run soon and see if problem is cured (fingers crossed).

Thanks to all who write in to these forums with advice. As I would of ended up taking it to a garage and getting ripped off.

All new car / SUV's & light trucks designed in the UK from the year 2000 had to have OBD II (On board diagnostics II ), any existing car / SUV / light truck designs had to have it included by the year 2001 & diesels by 2004. In practice most vehicles had it well before these dates especially if they were being exported to the USA.

Interesting.
Hopefully with even the likes of Argos now selling diagnostic testers the prices will fall as more are produced so following the previous pattern regarding electronic goods.

me thinks the ruling only applied to injuns, so fings like alarms, airbags and clever stuff don't necessarily work on the generic ones.
 
I've just ordered one from flea bay. A ELM 327 (laptop modle) £14 including postage. (from China!!!).

I'll let you know if it works when (if) I get it. Prob in about two weeks!!

Also since I have replaced my crankcase breather and Cam sensor. Not sure if it is my imagination. But it seems to take a few turns more before it fires up now :confused: :confused: :confused:

I haven't taken it for a run yet. But the manual says you should replace the seals on the return hoses on the injectors when you remove them.

I haven't, just bunged them back in. Could it be that I might have a small leak from them now and it is taking a couple of turns to build the pressure uP???? They did take some shifting to get them off!!!

Any ideas???
 
Sorry about delay in getting back. I had to do a few jobs.

I think my cam sensor was U/S. I had difficulty starting when it was hot. Had to wait untill it cooled down before it would start. Still not tested properly if changing the sensor has cured the problem. Will be taking it out for a proper run and test tomorrow. But have started it untill temperature reading normal. Then I have been able to start it ok after about 20 mins. it wouldn't start before after being left for about 20 mins, so fingers crossed. Still got to remove inlet manifold and clean that as well as disableing the ega.

Fink they are ok. . . . . but Porky sis wen yer plug it in [the doors fall orft] and leaves er big Chink. . . .oh un the headlights go all slitty. . . .:eek: :eek: :eek:

Not sure if its does everyfink it should, as I not got owt wrong with my TD4. But it does speak to the car using the freebee software from the tinternet. I'm still on the lookout for better software at the mo.

By the way my cam sensor was duff. Its now werking great. No more probs with starting when hot. So thanks to everyone who recommended me changeing it. Saved me a few hundred quid by not taking it to the stealer;) ;)

Thanks for the reply. I’ll be buying one too now. I understand that I’ll only be able to read engine data, and not the air bag stuff etc. This is ok for me. I have found someone who will sell me a device that does everything, but this is £450. It’s also licensed to your vin number, and won’t work with any other car. That’s too expensive to be worth it for me.

I plan to buy a pc based device, and will probably buy some software too. Will try it out with the free stuff first. Will post a thread about it when I do. Probably near the end of the year.

I too have been “taken” on several occasions by main dealers. Last year he needed a replacement auto gear box. Also a 60k services, and new pads/disks. Cheeky muppets even sent me a letter today reminding me it’s time to flease me again.

Going to try to do the 72k cam belt service myself early next year. If it all goes ok, LRO have sort of agreed to publish it in the mag, if it's good enough.
