Hi Folks,

Can someone tell me what I need to buy for my 1994 3.9 Petrol please.
Had a good look on eBay and all I can see are readers for 1996 onwards.

Cheers

I have a feeling you'll have to spend a lot of money to be able to view virtually nothing. I have a feeling it'll only be a 3 pin ecu plug.

Ratty's right, not worth the effort - or money. Its only the NAS spec cars which have the 2 digit fault display.I only bother using Testbook on them cos its so easy for me,but DIY its just as well with a decent multimeter and the workshop manual.

The guys are right. You're better off with a decent multi-meter. Although you can't read the ECU with one, you can check all the sensors.

There is a wealth of information about 3.5 and 3.9 V8's and I doubt there is anything that hasn't been covered one way or another for troubleshooting these motors. It will mean spending some time doing searches and it would be time well spent but as the saying goes, the answer is out there!

Thanks for the link.

Lots of info on the codes but the digital display seems to be missing on mine, or maybe its a US fitment. Checked both front seats just in case, lots of electrics and spare connectors which the display could have been connected to.

Checked with Halfords for a Haynes manual and they can only get them upto 1992.
Is this correct/will it cover the engine or is there another supplier for workshop manuals.

OOPS, browser didn't show the updates until after I'd posted this.

Cheers

Got my local garage coming out in the morning to see what they can find.
If they can't diagnose the problem then I'll have a think about the reader, £100 is a bit steep but better than trial and error I guess.

You should be able to get a haynes manual for your motor. I got one for mine 1998 Disco 1, 3.9 petrol, from halfords.
Its purple coloured if its any help when looking.
Covers the diesel and petrol models I think.

BTW if you really want a code reader, try this one:

Products
That will do codes, should have mentioned earlier that NAS = North American Spec, the code reader really isnt worth bothering with, interpreting live readings from a multimeter is a far better way to diagnose what,(If anything)is wrong.Reading the manual, and a good grasp of the wiring layout is far more help. Its a good simple system to learn from - you can really learn from them how it works and what its trying to do.And realise how good it actually was for its time. The CUX system was a big leap forward from the flapper system with the ability to control idle speed, store codes and run closed loop from twin Oxygen sensors.Good bit of kit, shame it has not had better press.....

Hi Folks,

Learning loads about sensors etc from reading posts, but what I could do with is an idiots guide as to where the main ones are and how to find/recognise/test them.
If such a topic exists could someone point me in the right direction please.

If not will create one when I know more than you can write on the back of a postage stamp!!.

yer main bits to need altering or go wrong are coolant temp sensor on the inlet manifold by the thermostat I think.

the airflow meter adjusment which is by an allen screw on its side.

the fuel temp sender on the rail doent often go wrong, which is good as its £80!

the throttle potentiometer is on the throttle body/air inlet

Hope that points a few of the regulars out for you :)

Thanks for the info.
Garage has suggested I change the spark plugs first, doing this in the morning.
If it still doesn't fire up going to disconnect the throttle potentiometer and go from there.
Understand from other topics that the engine will fire up with most of the sensors disconnected.
