Maybe it’s had a “free run” chip put in the ECU, if it’s put back in a RR I believe then some wiring needs changing at the BECM.

But the amount of wires that have been cut/changed makes me think just getting a matched set and binning what’s there may be a better way to move forward.

I came across the Tornado site online, which has some kind of tuning chips that promise better fuel economy and other "advantages". I understood that the chips would come in place of these chips that I have written about, and which may have a fault.

Tornado are OK. I suspect power and economy are mutually exclusive though.

But even with replacement BECM, GEMS, etc. the wiring still needs sorting. To be honest, unless the BECM has been messed with, sort the wiring locks & fob first. Then program a good GEMS to it, and it should all work.
 
I also wondered about the effect of those cut wires. Especially for a starter motor. It could be that completely bypassing BeCM here is causing the problem. If you want to ensure the rotation of the starter motor, a parallel connection must be made, so that the BeCM can also receive the same signal
 
The previous owner may have wanted to increase the reliability of the car by making these wiring changes. Here in Finland these cars are appreciated, but at the same time they are known to have a lot of electrical problems as they get older, even stopping them completely.
 
What you mentioned about C257 Pin-6 being bypassed to C177 could well be why the BECM does not send the code to the GEMS. The BECM does not know you are starting the car, so never sends any signal !!
 
Yes, that's exactly what I thought. Connector C113, pin 2 must be connected. Likewise C257, pin 6. If you want to keep the "forced start", it should be implemented with a parallel connection, e.g. with an additional relay. To line C117 pin 6 - C113
pin 2 must NOT be connected to anything extra!
 
I haven't been in the car at all, but I've looked at the diagrams. I might have an idea how to bypass the immobilization. There have been some hints about it on the forums. Question: Is it somehow taboo that we don't talk about it in public forums?
 
the hint is in the LR TSB I mentioned !! No need for special chips, wire cutting or shorting !! Just program the GEMS ECU correctly.
