1986 ex army / military police 110 defender. just put a new belt on it but is a bit big, frustrating but its not the end of the world. Before I order another one and find it’s also to long..... can anyone shed any light on why this belt is to long / is it the vehicle or was it just the wrong one. Thanks 2.5 diesel

I noticed on my na that the alternator had a small adjustment bar, and the civvy engine had a much longer one giving more adjustment. The original military one didn’t seem to get quite tight enough with aftermarket belts

+1 for the spare, along with a spare steering belt. they live in the battery box with tools/fluids and bulbs.

Weirdly never had issues with steering belt, but have had two pas pumps shear their drive shafts right at the end and lost belt that way, bloody dear for def 200tdi pas pump over 200 quid iirc!

Thanks for the suggestion of a spare, bloody good idea. My 2004 defender has been going great and up until now I have not bothered with a dedicated in car tool box like when I used to drive my old 2A. However last week I restocked the box and put it in, hopefully not A jinx but just a precaution. I will put an exa belt in there as well.
