it was a cheap one, i thought a belt was a belt, when i went to get it from the shop the guy told me he only had one that was 25mm too long ( very 'kin helpful) and he wanted 12 quid, went to a different shop and got the right one for 4 quid, don't think the pullies are out because there was no noise from the one that broke

get a candle and rub it on the inside of the belt. a nice waxy layer of it may help to futher cure the squeel

I got a cheap belt from one of the internet places and it only lasted a couple of months before all the teeth things fell off. So I put the old one back on as a stop gap till I got another new one and it's still going well.
Your problem could be in the pullies being worn and the belt not gripping the sides properly.

With the engine RUNNING, spray some WD-40 on the belt.

The trace of oily stuff on the shiny belt sides will make it slightly STICKY, and it WILL (a) stop slipping (which causes the squeal) and (b) stop squealing. The trace of slube also allows the belt to wedge deeper into the pulley vees and grip better.
Repeat as required.
This has been a standard squealing belt cure for as long as I have worked on cars, and that's since before WD-40 was invented.
Originally we used a few drops of oil from the dipstick to do it. The first time I saw it done was on my Mum's 1172 cc sidevalve Ford Anglia in 1958 .....
This cure is only effective if the belt is properly tensioned.
If it is slack then it will probably slip and squeal no matter what, and usually worse just after a cold start when there is most load on the alternator.
Give it a try.

Tried the WD40 trick on mine after the water pump sprayed anti freeze all over the belt and made it squeal. WD40 lasted about 5 mins every time I applied it and then it squealed again.
I bought a non-squeal belt off ebay for about £10 and it was cured.

Ive had this problem for about six months. Tried WD - lasted half an hour, crayon - no effect, re-bearing on the tensioner 2 hours.
And then as I was clearing out an old grain barn, I discovered a can of belt dressing, a short apllication and 4 weeks and several hundred miles latter still running perfect......
