Evening. Just got back from a little gravel road exploring in our mountains with my 1974 S3 and am now hearing a rattle from I think the fan belt… it is noticeable at idle when the belt and pulleys are still spinning. Other than the noise it’s driving/handling fine. How might I fix it or is it something else?

Thanks in advance
Elliott
ps I took a video but can’t seem to attach it.

Take belt off and run engine to see if noise is still there, not for long mind.
Then with belt off and engine switched off spin all the pulleys and see whats feels rough.
Makes sense… process of elimination. Do I have to release the tension to take the belt off? How?

Yes there is a bolt on the adjusting lever to loosen , may need to slacken off the mounting bolts too if they’re tight
Also check the small bolts holding fan on are tight

The series 3 workshop manual has a section on the routing maintenance very useful

Lovely pic by the way
