Hi. I just registered with this forum as, after ten years of trouble free services, my 1983 88 diesel Series III has broken down. Though perhaps it's not quite really broken down in that it is still going except for the fairley overdrive which no longer engages.
I'm about to remove it to inspect it etc. but have been told that if I take out its clutchsleeve, washer and stopper from inside the transmission box I will need to replace it with a gear-cog/washer/stopper in order to be able to continue using the car as the 4 speed gearbox will not work without the gear-cog (from what I'm told the original had to be removed during the Overdrive fitting, but as I bought the car with the overdrive already fitted, I do not have it) .

Does anybody know if this information is correct? And if so, where the necessary parts can be sourced in the UK? Any advice/help would be much appreciated. Cheers.

The information is correct. I have no idea where to get the bits from, but some one on here probably does.

you'll need a fair few bits.

biggest bit is the ally casting that supports the rear of the mainshaft, part 533731. needs to come complete with bearing, spacers, bearing retainers etc. Suggest you get this off a scrapper, as new could be expensive?

you'll also need a new gasket 622047, a new locktab 217476, and new gear 218244. these three items shouldn't be much more than about £20-£25.

Try someone like john craddocks for these. Please do check the part numbers before ordering though!

most of all, ideally, you'll need special tool 600300 to undo and re-torque the castle nut at the rear of the mainshaft.

you might get lucky on eBay, I've seen this whole 'kit' for sale a few times where folk have fitted overdrives, and have this lot spare.

Many thanks for the advice and help. I will check Craddocks for the parts and cost, as well as my local Land Rover place near Caernarfon.

Really glad I joined this site. Thank you again.

Great. Thank you for the link to the manual. Very helpful indeed. I've checked the cost of the parts required with Craddocks and my local Land Rover parts dealer; on average the local prices are 3 to 4 times higher than Craddocks'. Amazing. Thanks again. Cheers.
