HI

My disco has just failed its MOT on "Nearside front track rod end ball joint has excessive play"

Q1 any idea of cost to repair?

Q2 its it something worth having at repairing myself?

Thanks for any help
Zac

yup, cost you a tenner or so from paddocks, take you half a days blood sweat n tears ;)

Try undoing ball joint nut and then put a sledge hammer on one side of the track rod end taper and hit the other side with a big hammer - the shock very often springs the ball joint free.

It's still easier with one of these,

Clarke - CHT222 Ball Joint Remover - Automotive Hand Tools - Machine Mart

An fer 8 quid it's hardly worth not getting one.

Just done mine. Split ball joint no problem with big hammer, 1st hit. However the thread into the track rod end was incredibly tight, requireing a blow torch to shift. Also, go to Land Rover or a Land Rover specialist for the part otherwise u could quite likely be sold a left hand thread when you need a right or a right hand thread when you need a left. Don't buy the cheapest one available. It's worth paying literally a few quid for a better one. I bought a cheap 1 once and the rubber splits so easily, you will be doing the same job again next year. The dearer ones seem to fit better too.

i done mine the other day - phoned paddocks just to make sure i got the correct thead- right left etc. spoke to a guy who had done LOADS and told me it would be a bitch of a job and would def require heat to take off. With my old mans tools (ex rolls mech), his splitter tool, lots of wd40 i split it staight away and i then put the handle of the jack over the thread and pulled, it turned straight away! lucky i just guess, it had been on since 1996. job done in about 45 mins!

well had to do mine a few months ago an the thread striped inside the track tube:eek:

went to paddocks an got a compleate track rod an all parts for about 45quid:D

it was a piece of pi#s to do then:rolleyes:

use loads of copper slip or greese when you put it back together;)

if thats all she failed on
PRAY TO YOUR LANDROVER GOD HES BEEN KIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PART A TENNER OR SO mornings job if in dowt let the garage do it and remot her cost you £50 cheap i would say
Cheers Paul
