Yeah, the best way I can describe it as it's normal for a few seconds when you turn the ignition on then it gets brighter then normal, brighter then normal ect.
Where's the ecu?

thanks

So it is normal...then you start engine and it starts pulsing...???

Do anyother warning lamps also pulse??

If they do, I wonder if your alternator is dicky...and the SRS system generally doesn't like fluctuating voltages....but the most common systems to fault in the event of low battery is the ABS/TC system.....hmmmmm

Not sure where the ECU lives, under the dash I think, which makes dampness unlikely but not impossible.

It's pulsing with the ignition on and carries on when the engine is turned on. None, that's the only. If you bear with me a few moments I'll upload a video.

It was checked last night and there weren't any stored codes, all I've done is put the 2nd bulb in.

mick

Can you clear the air bag fault in message display by pressing left stalk lower button? If you can I would guess stored fault needs cleared
Check everything yellow for loose connections, be carefull

battery reads 12.5 then goes upto 13.6ish when engine is on. Just checked and yes, pressing the lower left stalk clears it. Would disconnecting the battery for an hour or so clear it?

No, needs diagnostics to clear, volts are a bit low, could be cables/connections but you have an alternator fault present in video, needs looked at,
perhaps or combination of things? should have showed on the diagnostic you had on recently

try measure direct on alternator when running to determine if it's cables or alternator

I can pop up saturday mick?
can't do tomorrow as im going to deliver a bath down brighton at 6pm
see what it says with both bulbs in?
hes got a new battery druim..changed it because old 1 was going flat! Ive said RF? Its close to the house and wifi?

yes 12.5v on battery is good enough, charge should be around 14.5v @ 2000 rpm
could disconnect the antenna until new RF's are available

Pulsing is too rhythmic and regular to be dodgy Alt....I am going with a dicky SRS ECU...but I would get the system re-read on diagnostics first

Not on a 1996 2.5 diesel it shouldn't, 14.2 max at 2000 RPM with headlamps on. :);)

14.2 volts with or without headlamps. Either the alternator is fecked or there is a bad connection.
The wattage of the SRS bulbs is critical, thay must be the correct ones.
Low battery voltage will cause an SRS fault.

Standard test ever since alternators were fitted to motor vehicles is to check battery voltage with engine off. Voltage should be between 12.5 and 12.8. Then start engine and note voltage. In this case volts should be between 13.8 and 14.2. Increase load by switching on headlamps and or heat blowers. Voltage will drop and then should return to previous figure as regulator increases alternator output to cover load. If voltage does not reach previous figure, raise engine speed to 2000 RPM, if voltage still does not rise to previous figure alternator regulator is duff or brush gear is worn. Maybe both.

That is more or less what I said, 14.2 volts headlights on or off at 2K rpm:)

Thanks guys, any chance of me having a prod have well and truly been rained off. The alternator fault message only comes on if it's been started then restarted in quick sucession, e.g getting fuel. Within a few seconds of pulling away it goes and all is well (ish) again.

Mark, you have mail!
