As I'm waiting for space in my workshop to be able to do the work on the other head gasket, I thought I might as well have a bash at a front end facelift and try out my new paint colour for the old bus.

Let me know what you think. Before and after pictures are below. :D

When you say facelift...are you talking about creating an Underpigeon ??

As per this total and utter pile of poo....

Nice colour! have you just done the headlights, the colour of the light & grille trim looks different?

Dead lord I'd never consider turning a perfectly decent MK2 into an Underpigeon! :( The parts don't fit correctly, I don't care what anyone says (being a paint shop owner!) and they look totally out of proportion when they finished. Rant over! Actually no it's not, once you've finished paying for the parts and someone to hack your car to bits to get them to fit you may as well have bought an early L322. Now rant over!!

What I've done is painted the grille satin black and the associated bits below the headlights the same. I've also split the headlights and painted the reflector satin black aka 2001 spec.
Then i got out the paint gun and as I was up to neck in base coating three other jobs I thought it wouldn't hurt to throw some at these to see how it turned out.
I like it, I think the Doctor Jones (reg plate DRJ, blame my wife for the name) is going to look pretty good after it is all purple!
It's BMW Techno Violet which is a high pearl mica colour. Goes bonkers in the sunlight but is impossible to catch with a camera.
You like?

You like the original colour???? There's a reason it was only on these for one year!!
Honestly I can't stand it, I've tried sooooo hard to like it but as very panel needs repainting except one, due to scratches dents and someone deciding to remove cramp with a Brillo pad, I may as well change this horrendous colour while I'm at it!

The thing is that in the pics it looks bearable but in the cold light of day it's stomach churningly vile. Also it's almost identical to the early frontera colour and we don't want any of that association going do we?!!!

:D

Is that the colour that goes from dark navy to a bright purple?
Ive always been a fan of pearls but not sure if it suits a rangie but since you can do it yourself try it you can always go back
Theres a guy round my way with a skyline that goes from black through blue red orange to gold looks mint but bet its not cheep

Must admit i haven't seen one in the flesh but something to be said for rare colours.

Just do a search for bmw techno violet on google an you'll see the colour and what it does. Most of the time it remains a pretty deep purple only in the sun does it spring to life. It's very beautiful though.

I've painted a 7 colour flip before and that was complicated! But it was beautiful, only problem was the price £500 odd a litre!

The problem with the original colour is that its fine during normal British conditions but as soon as the sun comes out it becomes some awful cross between pearl Limey, aqua bluey teal, and it just doesn't work on the Rangey. ,it didn't ever work on the disco where it started its life.

I'm just going to paint it this lovely purple and badge it as a special edition.....my special edition!!

It's going to make the truck look a whole lot more expensive, even though black makes them look most expensive, they also scream drug dealer, so i think a dep purple is the way to go with this one.

;)

"Scream drug dealer?"

Like mine you mean?:D:D

It's got factory fitted dark windows all round (except the windscreen) too!!:D

I wondered how the old dear who owned it before me manged to afford one!!!:eek:

Looks nice & could work on the P38.
I know what your saying about colours changing, my epsom green looks good in low light but the sun gets on it & it turns a little too light green for me.

Original colour is truly horrible, new colour looks as if it might be better, need more of it to be sure.

Thankfully someone knows the colour in person!! Once you've seen this colour there really is no forgetting it!

The purple is lovely, it really is, so I'm hoping to get a bit done at a time, around the head gasket replacement, AGAIN!

I'll keep you all posted with progress. i might paint the front bumper one evening next week as I can't do any mechanical work to it until one of my long term restorations has gone out on Friday. So it may get a few bits painted while I wait. We'll have to see!!

One of my best friends has an Epsom green one on an 'S' reg, looks just like
gfromleeds one, and it's a bit marmitey. Love it or hate it, but i agree it doesn't look all that good in the sunlight. But this one of mine.....awful is a compliment!

Ok, so you guys were right and I was wrong. It looks better than the alien vomit blue, but still looks terrible :( A tad devastated but nevermind.

It just isn't going to look right over the whole shell.

Oh well, black it is!! guess it's time to look like a dealer

Blimey, you don't want much do you?!!! Simply because I actually want to use this truck off-road for part of the year and anything that has a flip controller in it would require the entire half of the car being repainted :( otherwise the flip paint would have been my first option as i have a gorgeous one in the paint cupboard!!

I wish I could find a definitive list of the ACTUAL colours that ended up on the 1999-2002 cars.

You started it :p

I thought you were painting the whole thing anyway?
Not sure about the colour options for later models, especially with Autobiography specs to throw in the mix.
Come on....your a painter...get creative :D:D:D

Haha :p

I meant if the flip paint was damaged, it would need half the car repainting to sort it out.

It's proving quite difficult with the slab sided nature of the beast, plus I don't really want to make it look daft or chivvy. I wanted it to have a difference but not like the daft orange under pigeons you see around.

I think black with a nice set of chrome 20" wheels for summer and 18's or winter and off roading will be ok.

Java black seems to be a nice colour, might go with that, or Anthracite black from the MG's.

Still so many decisions to make!

Ahh...i see. Didn't realise flip paint was so problematic.
Can you get a higher metallic black than Java. Most black p38's i see look a little flat, although that may have something to do with the paint being over 12 years old?
