Yes I have made them and feel sorry for any D2 facelift owner who has their lights stolen. If patent office didnt take so long to get patents through I could start producing the kit as early as next weekend. I have to try and protect my invention as I am unemployed due to disability and this could be a way of me getting back to work and earning a living and helping others at the same time.

I am going to check with the patent office tomorrow as to whether I can supply the kits under a full NDA. This will mean that anyone I supply a kit to will not divulge any information about the kit or how it works or how it fits to the vehicle. If they break the NDA they will be liable for court action.

have you thought of Dragons den??? get some barb wire, rig it up to the mains and fry the fookers!!!!
best solution yet, there is no deterrent if they do ever catch em, watched all sort of cop programs on tv, they get a strong telling off and let on there way whatever they do and whatever distress they cause, if they got caught and had a hand chopped off they would maybe think twice? or maybe not!

240v, maybe? long as you disconnect before you drive away!

You are right, they only ever get slapped hands thats if they ever get caught at all. I just want to make it as hard as possible for them and possibly earn a living at the same time.

I have the kit made and have had it fitted to my car to test it out. I could start production by next weekend. Its the legal stuff that is holding me back from getting it out there.

People can still make their own using yours as inspiration as it would not be a 'copy'.
It might have been better to just make lots of them and sell them to be ahead of the game.

There are many products out there that are worth purchasing that have been copied by many others and the first made still sell.

Just my opinion!

it's quite easy to improvise one... you need two brackets and two N/C contact microswitch, fit them with the brackets so to be depressed by touching the lamps from behind, wired in parallel to the bonnet switch...when the alarm is armed and somebody moves the headlamp the alarm will go off... would be a quite noisy environment for the thief...though this will not stop him to take them if he has strong nervs:D

Its not about just making a noise as they try and take your headlights. It takes 10 seconds to rip a headlight out, I have proved this at a local breakers yard. My inventions stops them getting the headlight out. I have decided to start producing the kit from tomorrow, Monday. To get them out there and give my fellow facelift owners some peace of mind.

Good idea and glad somebody is prepared to give up their time and design something to prevent theft of land rover part's! maybe land rover should of got off their fat backside's and done something about it in the first place!

Being a victim of defender theft it is not a nice feeling to wake up and see a blank space on your drive:mad:

I would be interested in a kit;)

You do realise you can release as patent pending, if your granted the patent then it goes from the date you submitted your application so unless someone has already submitted they cannot copy your design...

I did know that jon. Its the bloody paperwork that has my head done in. Manfacturing it is the easy part for me and manufacturing the equipment to produce it is easy for me due to my mechanical engineering background. I hate paperwork.

A patent is not easy, my grandad was an engineer and designer and he had a few, use to take ages and was a nightmare like you say but once they send receipt of your application you can release patent pending. Patents are very hard to get though as they need to be totally unique and nothing else like it on the markets.

Good luck with it all though, could be a good earner...

There is nothing like it on the market. I have even searched through patent records, a wonderful and laborious task and there is nothing like it.

tbh, not sure the patent is worth bothering with, I've read some very valid points in Duncan Bannantynes book.

long and the short is although you may have the patent, it is a very tricky thing to enforce. there are no "patent police", it would be down to you to bring an action against the person(s) infringing the patent, at your cost.

Consider the following as (extreme) examples:

1) Land Rover are so impressed with the product, the immediately copy it and sell it themselves as a genuine LR kit/product. Fair enough, you have the patent, but you have to enforce it. You, as an individual will then have to engage a solicitor at your cost to fight the full might of LR's legal team
2) Bloggs 4 x 4 copy the product and start selling it. Again, you launch an action against them to stop selling the kit and the court finds in your favour and awards you damages and costs. Bloggs then fold the company as insolvent and launch again as Bloggs2 4 x 4. Net result, you lose the lot, and end up liable for your legal fees.
3) Some chinese factory start knocking them out and selling them on ebay. the best you can hope for is ebay stop selling them (unlikely) but the seller then starts selling them with another id.

Not trying to discourage you in any way, but wouldn't get too hung up on the patent thing, you could lose a lot of time and money which could be better spent on marketing the product.

Genuinely wish you well with this though.
