Hello guys,

did anybody find a solution to convert the fogs in DRL lights? It seems to be very difficult just because there are no conversion kits for Freelander 1 , 2004-2006 on the market.

Looking forward to hearing any comments.

did anybody find a solution to convert the fogs in DRL lights?

sort of ..
i fitted amber led fog bulbs ..
then .. angled the lamps as far down as they would go ..
at about 15ft away from a wall .. the fog beams are aprox. 8 - 10 inch ..
below the headlamp beams at their lowest angle ..

so they don't bother oncoming drivers ..

when i 1st did that .. i mistakenly adjusted them the wrong way ..
i.e. angled full up .. a few angry flashes that day made me look at them again ..
and reset them angled down ..

as for 'fog' .. if it's bad .. i'd angle the headlamps down fully to avoid glare-back ..
so far haven't needed to do that ..

saw one set of angel-eyes led things .. that would fit inside the fog lamp glass
wasn't sure if the glass comes off .. so didn't go down that road ..

btw: i use led side-lamps .. 27 leds per bulb .. 360 deg. illumination ..
mostly have those 'on' all the time .. plenty bright ..

Is it possible to upload pictures of the fogs? Which model and how do they look on the vehicle? I would like to use them as a DRL .

the fogs are the factory fitted ones ( 2006 td4 )
pics ? .. well as .. due to a minor bump .. one fitting got slightly damaged ..
i.e. the captive nuts for the screws ..
i've removed the fogs 'till i get around to buying new captive nuts ..
so only pic for now would be a pair of fogs on a table ;-)
or empty holes on the front bumper ..

how do they look ?
well i prefer them to the usual white light ..
easier on the eyes for on-coming drivers i imagine
be like fog lamps from years ago when many were amber / orange in colour
as were some headlights ..
( google "vintage amber fog lights" )

they work fine as fog lights ..
i.e. can see the road .. no glare-back from the fog ..
other drivers can see me without being blinded ..
( have used them about 3 times in foggy conditions )

if there's heavy road spray ..
or conditions are seriously murky during the day ..
i'll use them as drl's ..
in addition to the very bright white led sidelamps

i'll post some pics when i get them refitted ..
hopefully soon-ish ..
( shall save a bookmark for this thread )

i did get some weather proof white led strips for drl use ..
never fitted them ..
as the amber led fogs do the job well enough ..

the amber led fog light bulbs i bought from amazon.uk

just to add :
a pic of the factory fitted fog lamp ..

the adjustment screw can be seen top right .. ( yellow arrow )
that screw adjusts the angle of the 'back reflector and bulb' ..
the hinge is that tab sticking out to the right .. ( blue arrow )
and .. is supposed to be adjusted as follows ..
( .. for " fog lamp " purposes .. )

" Park the vehicle 25 feet from a wall on a level surface. Measure the distance between the center of the auxiliary light and the ground. Place a horizontal mark on the wall at that height.
Visual aim is made with the top of the fog light beam 4 inches below the lamp center at 25 feet with the lamp facing straight forward. "

I'm currently looking into LED rings inside the fog light lens, similar to those used in later Minis.

The Freelander fog lamps look suspiciously similar to the fogs used on the Rover 25, 45 and MGF (and the ZR, ZS etc).

Nodge, how would you fit an "Angel eye" LED to these? I guess you might be able to bake the lamp unit to remove the outer glass? But the LED would either have to be a string-lamp, or ovoid?

I'm currently looking into LED rings inside the fog light lens

advanced factors were selling them ..
but seems to be no longer on their site ..
but maybe they could tell you the make / part number
they were the right size for hippo factory fog lamps

how would you fit an "Angel eye" LED to these?

remove the reflector from the back ?
would need to be careful not to break the hinge tabs ..

my only thought against .. be that ..
the angel eyes would disrupt the fog lamp beam somewhat ..

The factory fitted fog lamps 2004MY onwards are the same as Ford Mondeo 2001 on I believe so that may be an avenue worth investigating

Something like these on the attached picture would be the best solution, but they suit Freelander 2 only.

No kit for Freelander 1

Yes, this is true, but there is no fog kit for them too. Have searched for a long time.

Heating the lamp up to 90° C should allow the glass to separate from the housing.

I was thinking of using a round ring of LEDs positioned around the reflector's forward edge.

Yes, that may well work nicely Nodge - I don't have any spare fog lamps, otherwise I would start experimenting (I want to do this for my MGF that shares the same fog lamp unit)
