1998 Diesel Freelander starting trouble when cold.
Hello,
I have a 1998 Freelander diesel (L series) that is difficult to start when cold. Once you have started it you can let it run for a minute or so and turn in off and it will start straight away.

I have put a new set of glow pugs in it, had the injectors and compression checked and they are fine, and I have also checked the coolant sensors. The injection pump timing and pressure has also been checked and is fine, I have also checked the cam belt timing and this is fine, I am running out of ideas, I have even bypassed the glow plug relay by putting a wire direct the the glow plug rail and the thing still doesn't want to start when cold. Once it is running it runs fine and there is no smoke, I have another 1998 Freelander diesel and it drives with the same performance an ideas?

Do you also know what system I would have to use to pull the DTC codes?

Gulp is this an echo!!!!!!thought i jist rit about it. . . .need ter lay down i fink :) :) :)

Definite echo mingey, unless he's spammin us......

I'll post on this un as its the newest,Right Ian180/Jamie, as Mingey sez, cud be the crank sensor, but if yer gettin white smoke on startup, could also be shot injector pump or an air leak.First get a lump of clear pipe and put it inline between yer priming squeezy jobby and yer fuel filter or between yer fuel filter and yer injectors. That'll show if yer getting bubbles flowing thru. If thats the case youv'e either got a leak allowing air into the fuel system(next find it..ho-ho-ho, see me siggy****e, I've changed that siggy, shows how much I notice...) or your injector pump is losing pressure/generating insufficient pressure on firing up. Funnily enuf, the weather seems to have an effect on mine, as on several bleedin freezin days of late, she's fired immediately(after an overnite stand) rather than the 10+ secs of norm..any ideas?

sounds like cam timing to me mate
you must pin the crank and cam when changing the belt on the l series engine
as only a few degrees out will cause this problem

Try changing the fuel filter,..if all else is ok as you have said.Sounds like a fuel feed problem, and could be a bit of ****e in the filter..im sure this has been on here before and that was the problem.

I'd agree Nags if this were happening all the time. Plus the bubbles going thru the clear tube on mine when its been left a while indicates a leak sumwhere..
