The eyebrow mudguards on my 1991 Defender 90 are looking a bit grey and sad - any ideas on how to smarten them up? I tried 'Back to black' which was no good. Waxoyle, perhaps - or would it be sticky? Black Hammerite? or would it crack?

I've tried a few things on mine. Boot polish is a total pain in the arse and can end up looking really patchy. I tried waxoyl and it looks great. It works well on the front grille too. It does scratch off under your nail, but doesn't rub off on clothes unless you really swipe against it. It's not really sticky either.

If you fancy colour coding the eyebrows to your car with paint there's no need to worry about it cracking (unless you buy cracked effect Hammerite). I've seen it done and it can actually look quite nice. Just make sure you dont fold them against a wall, a jeep if anything.

Linseed is probably your best bet as mondo said

It was an educated guess (still in the process of buying my first landy). I've seen it used to black out quite a few things (albeit on slightly more porous surfaces). But I would bow to Pos' superior experience as he seems to have tried it.
 
Waxoyl???? It'd be covered in bloody flies and all sorts of **** in no time:eek: Wiping it over with an oily rag perks black plastic up no end and lasts quite a while.
 
Spray GT85 all over it and dont wipe it off it will shine like new and if it hasn't already replace all your fixing screws with stainless ones.
 
What about vinal roof paint? I used some a few years ago, good stuff if it's still made. Try Frost.co.uk

Not going against it by any means. Boot Polish will work great if you can get it to rub in evenly. I tried and I tried but with no success. I ended up scratching it off as best I could and then waxoyl away. It's not got any flies stuck on it either!

Try boot polish, if you're patient it will come up great (perhaps heating it first might help?)!

I've used boot polish to cover minor scratches on black paintwork before and it worked well and lasted a long time. Has anyone considered the all time best coating for the exterior surface of a Land Rover...................MUD:D
 
[Putting any sort of oil based product on plastic will accelerate the materials natural aging process and is likely to result in the early onset on brittleness and susceptibility to cracking.

I’ve seen a 110 dash that was wiped over once a month with WD40 that has cracked and turned almost grey in color.

Why is eveyone so keen to smarten up their landies these days, you do know that if it's clean and shinny than the local tealeafs will find if of much greater interest.

Yes indeedy, keep it filthy and the pikey scum won't want to get their trackies dirty trying to get into it:D
