Popped over to Wales yesterday and saw Malcolm from Whitbread about a custom roll cage for my Defender Dormobile.

Not an easy one as 3/4 of the roof opens up, as per photo. We came up with a good solution and compromise which is to just protect the driver and passengers in two rows of seats. If I roll then the Dormobile roof is finished anyway.

Its going to have tons of bracing both down the rear and on the pillars between the front and rear passenger doors.

I've seen lots of photo of other cages that don't seem to be anchored to the chassis, these ones have plates which are welded or bolted to the chassis so its this that takes the load.

Also the sections are all welded together, some of the others look like they are bolted together. Someone said they use lighter weight steel, from what I saw it was very thick and solid tubing and the welding looks the best I have seen.

Will post a photo when its completed, probably in a months time, it will be an odd one i can guarantee. I have to leave the Defender with them for a week to fit as its not standard which they say they can do in four hours.

Price wise its not cheap but its not expensive either, cheaper than other quotes, and they only need the vehicle for a week, not six weeks as another company quoted.

PS I don't work for them just saying it as I see it.

Could some bolt in bars be fitted over the opening roof when you need protection the most and run without it other times when not as much of a risk then?

Although, Sod's law would be you'd roll it the one time when running without the extra bars :eek:

Part of the problem is that I have a water tank fitted behind the passenger side rear arch, this interferes with the plate that attaches to the chassis to strengthen the frame that fits around the rear windows, otherwise they could continue the cage around the back. It would still leave a large area un strengthened but I'll ask when I take it up for fitting as its got to be make with my vehicle there. The weight of the stuff they use is very heavy but I know what you mean.

The Dormobile roof aperture anyway is strengthened all round as well with a steel frame. Most of the time it will just be my daughter and I, so anything to stop the total collapse of the roof. Like below:

Iv been looking for the aforementioned product but searches on our favourite search engine only provide either internal cages, or externals for defenders or disco 2. Does anyone know of a company that sells them ?

Now that is brilliant lol

I did my own cage with Ian aka green hornet,
It's not perfect or to msa spec blah blah but it suits my requirements and had stopped the car getting proper damaged popping windows etc and Im confident in it saving the roof coming in on me if the worst should happen!
