Hi all,

Looking for bit of advice. Local garage had trade in of 06 freelander and selling cheap. They gave quick once over but saying there signs of oil in expansion tank.

Is this head gasket going? Could it be something else? Thoughts on buying and fixing (4wd is perfect which is why I'm interested)

2 litre diesel (td4) cheers

It's unlikely to be the head gasket then. But could potentially be the oil cooler leaking oil into the coolant. The oil cooler leaking is rare, but a TD4 head gasket is even more rare.

Not really. It's a moderately expensive job, as the oil cooler isn't cheap. But it's right at the front of the engine, and only requires the inlet manifold to be removed, so you can get a clear view of the cooler. You might as well clean the inlet manifold at the same time, as that's probably full of sticky oily goop.

If it has not had the coolant changed in 13 years it could well have contaminated coolant. Check the service record. If you do get it I would change the pump and coolant first job then make sure everything else is up to date
