Hi, sorry, yet again, another thread!

So i've noticed while driving, i can smell what i think is strong exhaust fumes?

I only smell it when i have me window open, so i've ruled out anything leaking in engine bay area, as even with fans blowing, i can't smell it.

Any idea what it can be? I'm sure it shouldn't smell that strong?

Unless i really rev the **** out of my car, i don't see any smoke from exhaust, if i rev it at about 6k revs i see some white smoke?

Can't see any 'mayo' in oil cap, and coolant level seems fine?

If anyone could give me any other suggestions, i'd appreciate it as always.

But please explain, in the simplest of terms! Haha!

Oh, before i get asked, i have a '94 300tdi disco, diesel :)

I'd check your exhaust manifold is tight. A new gasket is cheap enough. I had a similar problem last year, and found that the gasket was shot. Also, a the downpipe may need tightening where it meets the manifold.

Ummm, where's the 'down pipe'? lol

And what exactly am i looking for?

Same with the manifolds.

I know zilch when it comes to cars lol. So as much detail as possible would be great :)

Will check it out when i wake up :)

(Finished my night shift at 6am, so perdy knackered!)

If you have no idea of where to find those parts? That shows you really know nothing!!
My advice would be just take it to someone who does and get it done.

Exactly.. I'd have thought an underneath check would have been made first...........some people :fighting:

any leak in the exhaust system or even if tail pipe is rotten will give you the smell of fumes in the car especially if rear door seals are poor

A leaking exhaust could result in MoT failure or an advisory warning at least.

I'd be making sure that the vehicle is roadworthy before sticking childish decals all over it.

I'd strongly suggest you get a manual and also try to get a feel for where the parts are on the car and work through the fault and fixes guides.

Your going to need to get familiar with finding out what issues are and fixing them or your garage bills are going to be quite large.

The good news is, its a landy so its going to be pretty simple to fix and the parts are cheap.

Also go to youtube and type in Land Rover Discovery, there are 1,000 of video showing you info about the car you have.

And whatever you do, don't put a posting up here about tyres or suspension lifts.....

As previously posted to you, get the Haynes manual. In the mean time, the exhaust manifold is the big rusty looking bit of cast iron on the pavement side of the engine. It has the Turbocharger integral in it. It gets very hot, so do not touch when engine running. The down pipe is the bit that takes the spent exhaust gasses downwards and under the car where it meets the silencers and so to the back. If you can smell exhaust fumes then your boot flood could be full of holes. Pull up the rear carpet and have a look underneath. And please get the book!!!!!:faint2:

Okie smokes, think I got the jist here :p

Will get it checked out today, when I wake up :)

Thanks for your help guys.

Oh, and decals are still a go ahead haha!

Firstly get a Haynes manual, download (for free) Discovery 1 workshop manual, look on youtube at the "how to's" and if not sure about an unfamiliar part/word simply google it (and google image it) a particulate filter will serve the same purpose on a fiat panda as it will on your disco (may look slightly different mind hence the use of google images).

I used to get flipping at first trying to decipher my Haynes manual but its just a case of learning the words for the various bits, flange, crankshaft etc (sounds a bit carry on oooh matron).

We all gotta start somewhere......

Ok, so i've just come back from Scotland, had a very long but nice holiday there. (hence my lack of annoying posts!)

So my exhaust, i have learned it blows like a blue smoke, in 3rd gear, at exactly 2k revs, and cuts out the smoking about 2.5k revs.

The smell is still strong, and i apparently used alot of fuel, according to a mate on my travels?

So could that suggest the fuel filter?

(It's a 2.5 300tdi) I used about 2 full tanks, for around 500 miles. I had a full load and a roofbox on top, which is large and was full also.

Any ideas?

I kept an eye on my oil, and there is no apparent oil loss, as far as i can tell.

when you open a side window it creates a vaccum within the vehicle, so if you have a holy boot floor, fooked door seat at the back etc. it will draw the fumes in. when the fumes come out of the tailpipe when you are driving, they spread round he back of the vehicle, as there is a low pressure area behind it. ionce filled the downpipe on my escort van with grease so experiment with it as i used to have the same problem. got someone to csit in the back, when driving at 40ish i opend the window and imediatey you could see the smoke coming in thu the but where there was ment to be a door seal atthe bottom. also, ern looking in the mirrors, the smoke could be seen all round the rear of the van, because of the low pressure area.

sorry, dont know how to explain it better.
