They certainly needed changing on mine. I believe the design changed in 97MY. The flexis touch the exhaust where the two sides join to the centre silencer pipe.

Yes, I had a look under mine and there's no way you could get a second exhaust through there without moving the brake lines. Think you're right, must have changed in '97.

I have a 97 with double rear pipes, appt. this post should pop up as in prep for the MOT I noticed that the Middle box had broken off completely! Oddly the it makes no more noise that before so could have been like that for months. For a laugh u had a quote from kwick fit and the said the whole system needed doing at £750!! No thanks £54 for a middle box from island.

To be fair I didn't notice any noise either. The diesel is pretty loud anyway though. Be interesting to see if it is quieter when replaced!

Well, the exhaust arrived on Wednesday as promised. Looks the business.

However, I cannot see any bolts, rubbers or clamps. Don't like the idea of putting rusty crap back. Stainless steel bolts would probably be a good idea too.

Does anyone happen to know the specifications so I can get some nice new ones?

Cheers,

J

I had to go get clamps from the local motor factors. bolts? What bolts??

Any recommendations on exhaust sealant? Or will any generic stuff do?

My exhaust doesn't have clamps. There is a plate either side of each join that comes with the exhaust. There are 2 bolts that go through and then tighten the nuts to hold it. So, 4 bolts in all for the centre section to front section and the centre section to rear section. The front section has 2 bolts with springs that connect through to the centre section.

Fortunately the bolts were in a little packet hidden under a flap in the bottom of the box so everything I needed was there. My rubbers look fine.

On an aside, although the centre section looked good, when I got it off the weld on the centre box had a tiny hole on top just by the exit. So, good job I replaced it too!

Exhaust comes out straight rather than pointing down like the original but I'm very happy with it and hope it lasts!

Mines burst at the flexi before the cat. my doing by accident. No louder just hear a little phhht from it when you put it in gear

Are these gussets and flanges hairy or shaven. Or have i got the wrong end of the stick here? :D

A clean workspace is always an advantage, less to clean up and allows you to place the shaft, gland and nuts with out fear of cross contamination from what could be hidden in the mess.

Shaved then. :D:D:D

All highly polished. Slipped in a treat and tightened to within a whisker of the pain threshold. Job done.

Flanges. To me that suggests a flaring of the pipe itself. Collar might be more accurate but I guess it means the same thing.

No flaring of the pipe is believe it or not a Flare. The flare stops the sliding flange from falling off. In this sense a flange is for attaching two parts together. On an exhaust it can be a sliding flange or a fixed flange but the things the bolts go through to join the pipes are Flanges.:D:D
