QUESTION 1 - My rear silencer fell off yesterday, so which of these two would you recommend?

ESR2391 | Centre and Rear Silencer Assembly - 300TDI (except Japan) £44.93 (inc. VAT)

DA4223 | Stainless Steel Centre and Rear Silencer Assembly - 300TDI Non Cat (except Japan) - £248.40 (inc. VAT)

QUESTION 2 - Also, how long would the cheap one last (not much off roading, and only weekend driving normally).

QUESTION 3 - Or... would you recommend a different one?

QUESTION 4 - Is there a certain part that just removes the rear silencer and lets the exhaust poke through the side of the bodywork?

Do a search forfookssake, the side exhaust has been covered a million times and if you have that much money to waste on a weekend wheels project then spunk it on the stainless

And are you saying that the stainless steel one is basically a waste of money or sensible to buy??
 
The stainless one will last forever but is mega bucks, the cheap one will be galvanized to some extent and will last a very long time, and the fitment will be just fine.

there are various off roady types available i assume that poke out of the side but most i imagine are simply cut off back boxes with a bend welded on and then the centre box removed.

has to be said that a tuned/coolered 300 with no silencers does sound rather excellent :)
 
I thought the £300 I paid for my Janspeed SS system a bargain. :D

My past experiences with replacement mild steel systems is that they last only 18 months to two years and which is a lot shorter than the original factory systems, even the replacement LR genuine parts boxes that were fitted to my old RR only lasted 2 years, hence me now going for stainless when the replacement exhaust was required for my disco a four years ago.
 
I put a mild steel sports exhaust on in March 2012,the rear section is now almost rotted through.Not evidence of any form of coating on it,just plain steel.Bought from paddocks
 
It's true that OEM systems are some kind of semi stainless blend whereas cheap ones are mild steel but some are coated for sure.

Guess it's down to price.

£300 for a stainless v8 system is a good price but £280 for a length of bent pipe in a tdi is a little spendy IMO!
 
The "performance" one I got from paddocks 4 years ago is still going strong, with only light surface rusting around the joints. It's worth copper greasing the clamps etc when you fit them too.
You could always paint it with some high temp paint to make it last.
Oh, and if you go for a decat pipe, don't get the one with a flexi joint in, mine fell apart in 18 months, and it wasn't a cheap one.
A tuned 300 with straight through system (only a back box on mine) does sound nice :)

That's £300 for a cat-back only system, two boxes and a bit of pipe :(

The disco left the factor fitted with the exhaust made in aluminized steel, (which I believe is the minimum standard now days), so with life span better than mild steel but not as good as stainless steel.

My past experience of exhausts is that the mid or back boxes rot through at the bottom from inside or at their joints with the pipe, with (as I know) the back box falling off if that happens.:D

All they would have is a standard pattern system much like you'll get a local exhaust/tyre centre but in stainless, you will have to go to the specialised exhaust firm to get "performance" thay can provide data on the 'perceived' increase in performance to back up their design.

I don't really want a performance one... I just wondered what it was!

So currently there's two votes for the £207.00 stainless exhaust & one vote for the cheap one. One person says the cheap one will last a few years and someone else says it won't last long at all!

Still don't know what to do...
 
I fitted the £40 version last week to replace the rusting colander that was trailing behind and it works fine

Think about it this way,

1 x £250 = a 'lifetime' exhaust

or

A £50 exhaust that lasts 3 years. Say £50 times x 5 = £250/ 15 years worth of exhausts.

If you are budgeting £250 get a £40 exhaust and spend £210 on new springs and shocks or 2 tyres, a snorkel etc etc

Its just an exhaust pipe!
 
IMO. Buy the cheaper of the two; will leave £200 to spend on other repairs as they become necessary. Can anyone tell me the difference between UK / Jap spec exhausts?
 
Then there's the labour charge and loss of use of the vehicle, unless u actually like changing exhaust systems what ever the weather, then there's inflation £50 to day won't be £50 next year or the year after.

Japanese spec diesel exhaust systems have a better emission control kit fitted which u can do away with in the UK.

Ah Spongebob it's been a while !!

I've used the Paddocks supplied TDi 300 sports exhaust on a number of TDi 300's all with great results and lasted the life of the vehicle whilst I had them - no signs of rust. Also I would strongly advise getting a de-cat front pipe in addition - your Disco will thank you for it.

just buy the cheap one and be done with it, its a weekend toy from what your saying its gonna last as long as you have the vehicle!

thebiglad - Thank you for the advice, and no, I won't ask a million questions... I'm starting to get used to being a basic mechanic now... :D

Also, my Disco already has a de-cat pipe (fitted by the previous owner), which is good.

And the part you suggested (ESR2391) is exactly the same one I found too, so I'm going to buy the cheap one (maybe with new bolts, gaskets etc... if needed).

I'm delighted to hear that Fishsponge. Just a little tip for you: if you are going to replace the exhaust system from the downpipe (already done) to the rear of the vehicle, buy yourself some new rubber exhaust hangers.

Two reasons for this: 1. the old ones might be bûggered & 2. it makes it MUCH easier to get the old exhaust off if you just cut through the old rubbers, knowing that you have new replacements already in stock.
