My landrover, a 1978 Series III was in the MOD until 1985, then registered on the road.

Back then it had a 2.25 Petrol, now it has a diesel, but it has deuluxe seats, Lucas battery ammeter in the dash which doesnt work and hazard warning lights which were factory fitted.

Does this mean it was perhaps an officers car, or a "hack" for an airbase, or something?

It doesn't mean anything. Show me a landy that hasn't had parts changed or uprated or messed about with.

yeah doesnt mean anything. all of them at our unit all have exmoor trip deluxe seats and ameters etc

As the 70's progressed the MoD purchased increasing numbers of CL, as distinct from GS, Land Rovers, basically civvy speck. What rear cross member has it got? I think towards the end on the 70's if they didn't need to be 24v (ie FFR) they went for CL. I've come across a few hybrids as well, largely Civvy spec but with some military features. I am talking about vehicles new in service here, once they've been out for a few years, anything is possible.
