I've just aquired an ex-military Series 3 - great truck ...with one little issue which I wonder if someone can assit woth.

It has the usual mil-spec electrics - 24V and an interesting centre console with lots of extra switches, including an IR switch and including a great big button that sets the hazard warning lights off - but unfortunatley the indicators don't work (Which makes for some excitement and interest at roundabouts)

Because of the military wiring I'm stuggling to trace the source of the problem (The - or at least one - flasher unit works because the indicator lights work as hazard lights and the direction switch switches OK) The wiring from the stem dissappears into the loom - appears behind the miliitary facia (into the back of the hazard warning switch) never to be seen again.

I just get the feeling there is something silly that I have missed

Steve, I'm a new boy too! also just got a S3. Can't offer you an answer at the moment I'm afraid. But all I can offer is the fact that I'm in the process of creating a colour wiring diagram and I can get you some pics of my car for reference if it will help?

Thanks for the offer, all information helpful.

I'm no electrical wizard, but have looked at this a bit further and I'm not getting any live feed to the back of the indicator stem....or at least something is drawing it away........think it's the switch itself breaking down and going to earth because I frigged it via a 24V feed off another source and this also dies away.

I've ordered a manual from the EMLA (ex Military Land Rovers Association) which has the wiring diagrams for military spec landy's - it might save you a job as well .
Web address is www.emla.org.uk

hi there i had the same problem gave up trying to trace it after two weeks finaly ripped the whole loom out and started again and changed from 24v - 12v and positive earth to negative earth, sat down with some trailer wire and some crimp connectors. works perfectly now.

I have a S3 24VFFR LWB.

I also have an MOD User Handbook. The Appendix has a wiring diagram in it which I have scanned in.

What is the best way to send it?

I also have just picked up an ex mod 109 that's 24v, do i need to keep the two big battery's in the back that i assume are for the radio gear?

this is probably not the right answer, but by curious coincidence i also have recently purchased an ex-military s3 109, with the BBK (bloody big knob) fitting. i couldn't turn my indicators on either; mostly because my son had turned the BBK from the centre position to the first anticlockwise position, which seems to turn the indicators off. i am sure there is a good reason for it.

edit: the BBK is in fact a "convoy lighting system". apparently. yur

You're right me ol' mate. The centre switch controls the lights for "normal" use and for convoy driving. So, as well as yer usual ON and OFF positions you've got positions for headlights off but indicators and brake lights working, headlights and indicators off but brake lights working, no lights at all, probably one or two others I can't remember. So, before you start pulling your LR to bits (there'll be plenty of time for that later;) ) try your indicators with the main switch in different positions.

If you get really stuck ask someone in here http://forum.emlra.org

if i remember correctly you have, off, side and tail, side tail and head, then you have on the convoy side, side lights and convoy light. (little light that shines on the diff) or just convoy. your indicators and brakes should work in every position except the two convoy ones.

i have (from left to right) HST, ST, ??(rubbed off) Centre, C, SC

As you say, indicators seem to work fine on HST, ST and T, when i correctly locate the knob (my knob is a bit stiff you see...) fine in the centre, then not on the convoy ones. the amber switch seems to do nothing, however in any setting. and there is a shiny new diff which seems to lack the light.

the convoy light should shine from above i can't remember exactly where it is. shouldn't be too hard to find. it's about 2" long and maybe 1" in dia.

the IR switch wont do **** unless you have infra red headlights and what is this amber switch thingy like??

i haven't played with the ir stuff - its got a switch cover on it. having seen all the films where the important button has a switch cover on it i thought i'd leave it be, for fear of firing the satellite mounted laser or some such. the amber switch is just a amber rocker switch, which i guess has a light in it (looks like it should have), mounted just below and to the right of the convoy knob. its probably a hazard switch, and its probably not wired up, like most of the stuff in the dash (water temp, oil pressure, speedo etc are all non functioning - number three on my list of jobs for tomorrow.) at least, i hope they're not wired up.

thanks for your advice and guidance. :)

some of them had a switch/light for checking the brake system... don't think any of them ever worked. but i'm sure that was a black rocker switch with a red light. it may have faded over the years and now looks amber

quite a bit like that, but amber.

dunno its not the one i was thinking of,.......are you sure its not just one somebody has stuck in for spotlights or something??maplight??

don't think that would work...not with the yank policy of " if you can see it..shoot it!"
